Sorry I seem to have been a bit hasty.

Yes the description I saw used the words "... light bending round the support struts ...".

I imagined the strut acting like half a slit (as in the double slit experiment). And the spikes are interference patterns.

I held off answering because I thought Wolfy might give a real answer instead of my guesswork based on his explanation.

Yes, double-slits were in my mind too. I just didn't quite believe that it would work that way.
