Where in the multiverse

I've just heard a BBC reporter say New York was the inspiration for Gotham. I've always thought Gotham was more like Chicago.

I've had brief look but can't find any direct reference.

Hey, I've found something I don't know. Does anyone?

Adam West Batman TV series used New York locations. However, Batman Begins uses a digitally enhanced version of chicago.
