Fillings (#31)

I'm not convinced that fillings are magnetic.

Maybe the electro-magnetic field heated them up and made them uncomfortable, but then where's the blood from.

Or perhaps Fred, thinking he's a bit of a Troll, has some serious ironmongery in his mouth...

Re: Fillings

Yes I was a bit uncertain about that. If I eat a bit of tin foil (not that I make a habit of that, but sometimes it sticks to the bottom of food or something) I get some kind of reaction from my fillings, which feels like an electric shock. So it seemed to me that he might be getting an induced current from the magnetic field. But you're right, that wouldn't cause bleeding. And anyway, I have the old-fashioned metallic fillings. I think that these days they use some kind of ceramic stuff, which probably shouldn't react at all.

It's in character for FRED to have piercings, and I wish I had thought about it right back at the start, but nothing has been shown even though we've seen him in states of partial undress. And I don't really want to think about piercings in places we haven't see yet.

Overall, it was a pointless panel and I probably shouldn't have included it. It just seemed like a cool idea at the time.

If you fold up chewing gum paper (tin foil) and bite it, you get a really sore electric shock, if that helps.

Re: Fillings

The electric shocks come from having different kinds of fillings, most often both gold and amalgam (mercury and silver(?)) fillings.

It's the usual "battery" physics, as you short-circuit gold fillings with amalgam fillings. The mouth is a slightly acid environment, you have two metals of different electric value - and voilá! - you have electric currents.

At least that's what I believe what's happening.

I think you're right, Firle.

And yesterday I had to suffer a barrage of question like, "What about people's phones?" "Why didn't it pull the shield?" etc. I really regret putting that panel there...

Surely the shield is made of revolutionary material like the Major Democracy suit/uniform thing? So it wouldn't be attracted anyway!

In spiderman 2, when something similar happens, watches and so on are pulled, but no fillings or phones

My phone seems to be mostly plastic. Even the electronics will be more plastic and silicon than anything else. But a watch might have a metal (stainless steel?) bracelet.

Re: Fillings

Even if the fillings were metallic enough to be pulled out, there would still be no blood as the rest of the tooth would remain, unless the force pulled the whole tooth out I suppose.
Maybe Fred caused this himself in some sort of doomed premonition.
