...are being studied to learn how to make spider silk.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8083962.stm

Research into small spiders has not come up with any useful way of making artificial spider silk, but giant spiders have a different sort of silk, which is now being studied.

The best use of spider silk, of course, is bullet-proof costumes for superheroes.

As all dedicated readers will know, spider silk was used in the 24th century to make the bullet-proof costume of the Strikeforce member Scorpio (who later called himself Major Democracy).

Major Democracy's costume was later inherited by James Thursday. It is still apparently bullet proof.

Especially alert readers maye have asked themselves why the costume is still bullet proof. All anomalous advanced technology is supposed to have stopped functioning during the Event, and a 24th-century piece of engineering is certainly anomalous.

Not if its spider silk, which still works for spiders. As I'm sure the scientists will verify.
