Announcements: Important:HVEL will be relocating to a Proboard, which is currently under construction. It's been great here, hosted by runboard, and this was a great way for me to start out, but due to the more advanced, efficient, manageable, and interchangeable features, I have decided to move HVEL to there. This board will always be here, as a sort of museum to the past HVEL and the promise of the future.

Two Years Before the Mast, by Richard Henry Dana, Jr.

This brilliant account is the author's journal of two years spent serving "before the mast" on a merchant ship from Boston to California. "Before the mast" refers to common sailors who sleep in the forecastle (the forward hold of the ship), therefore, before the mast.

This voyage occured from 1834 and 1836, and provides occasional insights into American history of the times, especially California. Mr. Dana revisits California about 25 years later, and he includes his insights into the huge changes that occured in that period at the end of the book.

This book is primarily about what it's like to be a sailor in these times, and the account is absolutely fascinating. He explains events as a sailor would, but you do not need to understand any nautical terminology to enjoy this book. In fact, you can definitely enjoy this without any knowledge of the sea whatsoever, as the narration is completely engaging and exciting.
