Announcements: Important:HVEL will be relocating to a Proboard, which is currently under construction. It's been great here, hosted by runboard, and this was a great way for me to start out, but due to the more advanced, efficient, manageable, and interchangeable features, I have decided to move HVEL to there. This board will always be here, as a sort of museum to the past HVEL and the promise of the future.

The Lord of the Rings

I thought we could have a general discussion about the "Lord of the Rings" - all three parts, and the appendecies.

This book is my favourite work by Tolkien, though it's certainly hard to choose!

Who is your favourite character, and why?
Sam Gamgee is definitely number one for me, for many reasons. He's extremely loyal and brave, and without him the Quest would have undoubtably failed. He is also a gardener and forester, which I admire. He is humble, but a great leader, become mayor of Hobbiton 9 times IIRC.

What is your favourite location?
I love Fangorn Forest, but I also love The Shire, Gondor, Lothlorien, and Rohan. It's really hard to choose there.

What was the most moving part of the book for you?
This is the hardest of all to decide. But I was deeply moved by Frodo's sacrifices in Mordor. How he was captured and beaten, and when he was rescued by Sam they still had to cross the Plains of Gorgoroth with little food and water. They were also recaptured (in a way) by orcs, and forced to endure a terrible march. This was worse for Frodo than Sam (Sam himself felt so.) In addition, Frodo was tormented by the Ring the entire time. Tolkien describes the filth, stench, and suffering in such vivid detail that you can almost feel Frodo's anguish.

Discuss away my fellow Tolkien fanatics! emoticon

People who are new to the books should also feel free to ask any question (not pertaining to the movies) here. No question is too small! Sometimes the most minute detail reveals a major plot element. emoticon

My favorite character: I don't know.

My favorite location: I'll have to go with Fangorn Forest, because it's empty, except for large, slow, treelike creatures that have such a benevolent appearence.

Most moving part: I cried when I first read the part where Theoden died.

---
Siegfried: Fafner-slaying, god-dooming Walsung.

My favourite Character: Aragorn. He is just so noble. He's been my favourite character ever since The Council of Elrond on my first read (I'm on my ninth!) The way he handles situations and disn't hot headed in any situation.

Favourite Location: Either the Shire or Imladris. The Shire bacause although it's simple it sounds like such a great life to live, not to be troubled by anything. Imladris because it's the ultimate elven get away.

Most moving art of the Book: The end. I was almost in tears when I first read and still am whenever I read it again.
