Well, you know Sauron who made the Ring in LotR? Well, there's a lot more to Middle Earth than that, in fact, there are more "history books" on Middle Earth than all three main books combined. Anyway, long before the whole ring incident (which, for lasting 2000 years, is a minute fraction of time, a pinpoint on a yardstick), back in the beginning, Illuvatar and the Ainur (God and his angels) created Arda (the "planet" Middle Earth was in, possibly, and in fact probably, supposed to be early Earth), but one of them, Melkor, also known as Morgoth, fought against them. Anyway, a long time later (a LONG time later) the Elves were created (LONG LONG LONG time before humans, possibly millions of years) and he corrupted them and made Orcs. Well, basically, at the time until his capture by the Valar (the 14 "angels" that live on Arda guarding it from him and keeping order), he was Sauron's boss.
