Announcements: Important:HVEL will be relocating to a Proboard, which is currently under construction. It's been great here, hosted by runboard, and this was a great way for me to start out, but due to the more advanced, efficient, manageable, and interchangeable features, I have decided to move HVEL to there. This board will always be here, as a sort of museum to the past HVEL and the promise of the future.

The Rugby Club

This isn't really a club - anyone can post. Rugby teams are often referred to as clubs, so this is appropruate.

I love rugby, and my fellow mod Telcontar does too! Who else loves this fine and noble sport - either watching or playing?

Interesting fact about the origins of rugby: it was invented by William Webb Ellis during a soccer/football match in 1823. He got frustrated and simply picked up the ball and ran with it. The captain of his team apoligized for his antics, but the game of rugby was born. This was a Rugby College, in England - from which the sport took its name.
For a long time, rugby players considered passing to be cowardly because you were copping out of getting tackled. However, it became recognized as an important strategic move. This and many techniques were added to the game, finally resulting in the sport we know and love today. Now rugby is enjoyed all over the world by women and men of all ages!

William Webb Ellis:
William Web Ellis was born in 1806 in Salford, and went to Rugby school in 1816, where he performed his famous deed at the age of 16. In 1825 he attended Oxford University, where he won a cricket blue in 1827. He eventually became the chaplain of St George's Chapel in Albermale, London. He died in 1872 in France.

The Legend:
THIS STONE
COMMEMORATES THE EXPLOIT
OF
WILLIAM WEBB ELLIS
WHO WITH A FINE DISREGARD FOR THE RULES OF FOOTBALL,
AS PLAYED IN HIS TIME,
FIRST TOOK THE BALL IN HIS ARMS AND RAN WITH IT,
THUS ORIGINATING THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURE OF THE RUGBY GAME
A.D. 1823

Rugby, what a great sport. I used to be Fly Half but recently got put as Flanker in a school game and loved it. I either play there or Number 8. I had a game on Wednesday and won 31-0 with me scoring the first try! emoticon I have another game on tuesday.

Just had another game for the scooh. We won 40-7. I again played Flanker and again got a try. I should have had another try. I charged down a kick out of the scrum. Their player knocked it back and I dived on it but the ref called a knock-on against us? We won anyway and I have another game this coming Tuesday.

Wow, way to go Telcontar! Congrats on your try. My brief stint at fly half involved hurting my shoulder. People are far more likely to get hurt at the beginning of the season.

I've actually never scored a try, but I don't suck! emoticon Maybe I should have been a forward - tackling and passing are my strong points, not running. However, I'm possibly too short. I love centre or fullback anyway. Woo backs!

That's what I used to think but I started playing in the forwards and loved it.

Sweet. Those are a good idea. So are scrum caps (especially for forwards). They prevent concussions, yea! emoticon

Not sure about the scrum hat as I am either flanker or number eight so I'm not fully in the scrum.
