Samurai
The ruthless band of warriors that were highly trained swordsman as well as heartless jerks. If a shogun (which is like a king of their own land) didn't like you, he'd send samurai after you to decapitate and mutilate your body. *shivers* ugh....I'm glad they aren't like that today!

Re: Samurai
Cool!
But didn’t samurai follow the code of bushido?

Re: Samurai
the code of the bushido was just some cover up crap to make the samurai sound like peaceful warriors. yeah, samurai were connected with nature, and yeah they meditated and stuff, but if they were told to go chop someones head off, they'd be right there to do it. back then and even now, it's all about the money.

Re: Samurai
I have no idea the only thing that he is ever called is a manslayer. So maybe there were evil samurai in that story?

Re: Samurai
rounin. samurai without a clan/master.
for kicks, i'll type the whole paragraph my history book has on Samurai:
The Samurai: The samurai were professional warriors, specialist in the use of force and the arts of fighting. THey served the provincial lord of Japan, who relied on the samurai both to enfource their authority in their own territories and to extend their claims to other lands. In return for these police and military services, the lords supported the samurai from the agricultural surplus and labor services of peasants working under their jurisdiction. Freed from obligations to feed, clothe, and house themselves and their families, samurai devoted themseleves to hunting, riding, archery, and martial arts. THey lived by an informal but widely observed code knwon as bushhido("the way of the warrior), which emphasized above all other virtues the importance of absolute loyalty to one's lord. While esteeming traits such as strength, courage, and a spirit of aggression, bushido insisted that samurai place the interests of their lords even above their own lives. To avoid dishonor and humiliation, samurai who failed their master commonly ended their own lives by seppuku-ritual suicide by disembowelment, sometimes referred to by the cruder term hara-kiri ("belly slicing).
pg. 350, chapter 14, part III, Traditions and Encounters: A global perspective on the past by Jerry H. Bently and Herbert F. Ziegler.
whee! that was a lot to type and got the copyright stuff down. XD hope that was informative.

Re: Samurai
Instead of calling it "belly slicing" couldn't they give it a shorter name..... like lyposuction?
