Mitchell R/East Prong Yellow Sally sz 16 , 5-8-2006
This little guy gets a lot of press, it is a Yellow stonefly---these guys come in yellow and light green, and the fish love them, particularly when egg laying flights take place. They are differentiated from the mayflies that hatch by their "helicopter" style of flight, which is slower and more cumbersome than the graceful flight of a mayfly. If you use a Tellico Nymph or Hare's ear nymph on bottom, or a Yellow Stimulator or Yellow Caddis on top, you are probably imitating this fly. These flies are commonly a sz 16, but can range from 14-18, and are an April through fall possibility on Southern Appalachian waters.
