Quill Gordons on the Mitchell 3-8-2006
This sample bug was taken from the Mitchell R. on 3/9/2006, and there are lots of these in the river right now. These are going to be hatching in the days to come. This nymph is a fully mature Epeorus pleuralis, or Quill Gordon, a size 12. There are lots of them in the river right now, and they will be hatching soon. This nymph has two tails, which is characteristic of this type of mayfly, and not to be confused with Stenacron and Stenonema (Light Cahill/Cream Cahill) --which are similar in shape and appearance but have three tails. All three are common to the Mitchell. The surrounding area, most notably the Stone Mtn/Upper Yadkin Drainage, is a little higher in elevation and hatches there of this insect are a little later than the Mitchell.
