Mitchell R. Sulphur Spinner size 16 5-8-2006
This fly is a Sulphur spinner, size 16. If you fish evenings and especially til dark you'll find this fly over the riffles, often in great numbers. These are mating flights, once the male and female mate in the air, both come down to the surface. The males die, the females lay their eggs, then fall to the surface and die. Much of the great dry fly activity late evening til dark at this time of the year can be attributed to spinner activity. Not only can rising fish be a tip off that this activity is occuring, but also increased bird activity (swallows and phoebes, as well as bats) can be a give away. Have plenty of yellowish/orange, as well as rust colored dry flies in your box. If you have ever wondered why there's a rusty spinner dry fly pattern and what it is used for....there you have it!
