SMITH R 7-29-2006
Guided Trip lower Smith R., Koehler and Fieldale, Dr. Jim and Martha Kaley , Greensboro,NC. Caught a good many on nymphs early on, a double nymph rig, Jim did really well with this rig, and probably caught 15-20 with it. Martha did well with dry flies, in fact she caught all her fish on top, probably a dozen in all, including several rainbows. We snapped several really good ones off on the take, some really good ones!!!!!!!! well, that will happen sometimes with 7X and a terrestrial. Martha caught one really nice rainbow , and not so much the fish but the cast was to the fish as it was rising and about 8 feet back under a set of branches that were only a couple of feet off the water. Lots of tiny BWO's, Pseudos on the river in the early to mid pm hours. Although beetles are still working, and we caught fish on them, Jeff's Smith R Ant was the one to have today. It killed them, and especially several of the fish that were sipping olives. In fact, several of the larger fish sucked it right in. We finished the day with about 30-35 fish, and left just as a very heavy shower had set in. The river will likely be very stained or even muddy tomorrow.
