SMITH R 7-28-2006
Guided Trip lower Smith R., Fieldale, VA., Mike Workman, Thomasville, NC, We started at first light while there was still a heavy fog on the river, had a great day, especially the first half of the day, with a hookup on the second cast, which turned out to be a nice brown, and another, and another--all on a double nymph rig. We caught probably 10 or 12 fish in the first hour and a half of fishing, an equal number of rainbows and browns. We only caught a handful of fish on terrestrials, including a beautiful wild rainbow, as well as several other rainbows. We caught several fish on dry flies too, including a Jeff's Redneck Caddis, a Jeff's Beetle, but as the day went on the water started to really cloud up from upstream runoff due to rains of the day before. There's a building BWO hatch (Pseudocloeon size 24) in the early pm hours, as is normally the case this time of year, including this one that came off the water and was in the process of hatching. We ended up with about 25-30 for the day, about 2/3 of the fish rainbows, including some wild ones.
