Smith R. 7-19-2006
Guided trip lower Smith R. Koehler and Martinsville, VA, with Tom Jackson , Lexington, NC. The fished under bright sunny skies, blazing hot temps, and the river was back to its normal low and clear!!!! We caught probably 25-30 fish, about 7 or 8 of which were rainbows. The Jeff's Pea**** beetle had been the hot fly over the past several days, and it caught the largest fish of the day---but today for about 3 hours my favorite Ant pattern , Jeff's Appalachian Ant, was the fly to have. The Jeff's Beetle did well on larger fish, several nice fish today. A good many of the browns were of the usual lot , several nice rainbows were mixed in too. We caught some good ones today, one of the browns was 16-17", some 12-13" there, and a pair of 13-14" rainbows. A great day!
