Dan River
I might be going to the Dan on the weekend of July 1st and 2nd. What can I expect when I get there fly wise. I am going with a buddy who is a spin fisherman but has limited knowledge on flies and/or hatches. Any info would be useful. Thanks in advance
Tom

Re: Dan River
Royal Wulffs in 14/16 and EH Caddis same sizes always worked well for me. Maybe a Prince or Tellico Dropper off the rear too.

Re: Dan River
Tom,
There are some heavy hatches in the evenings this time of year. You mihgt catch the tail of the green drake hatch they see up they. Also expect a heavy stonefly hatch. I very large (8-10) goddard caddis imitates it. Splat it down like fishing a terrestrial. We have had great success on the special regs area above the dam. Good luck

Re: Dan River
I finally fished the Dan River. This past Monday, July 10th, I went up with a buddy from my Church. He fishes this stream at least twice a month. The day started slow and while I was fishing a rapid run. A guy came running out of the woods with a net of trout. Pretty funning to see this. After talking with the hatchery people I was pretty impressed. They where spreading them out along the river and being careful about it. They said they stock that section about 2 times a month.
Anyway my friend caught a good size brown of about 12 inches using a spinner in a large deep corner pool. I notice some fish rising and switched to a stimulator size 14. I ended up catching 3 browns and a brookie. None more than 10 inches but still a good time. The other guy with me caught 2 or 3 browns. The trip was only a little over an hour from Lexington. I prefer to fish for native fish but this was still a good learning experience on some of the local streams.
