Smith River 7/15 & 7/16
I took my 16 year old son (who has only fished 6 or 7 times with a fly rod, and mostly at Stone Mtn, or the Mitchell) up Saturday afternoon, and he fished the lower section of the special reg area. I had him throwing a beetle against the bank for a few hours. He had well over a dozen takes, but he did not end up hooking, or landing any. I told him not to get frustrated as it takes a while to get the strike method down. In most cases he either struck to hard, or missed seeing the take. At any rate I mentioned to him that the strikes of beetles on the Smith can be tough/difficult. At one point he got a little tired or frustrated and wanted me to fish. So I took the rod and threw for about 5 minutes and hooked about a 9" brown. Then we moved back to him throwing. He said dad I want to go, but I insisted that he give one more spot a try. He did not see the point, and he said that there weren't going to be any fish in that spot. Well he had 4 takes one cast after another to end the day. Still no hook ups, but alot of fun, and a few laughs.
On Sunday I ventured back up by myself and fished an arean I had never been on, just upstream of the bridge at Town Creek. I picked up a couple, after a little over an hour but the action seemed a little slow compared to what we were getting yesterday, so I moved back down to the lower section on the special regs, and had a couple of more hours before dark. I need to mention that the water was just a little murky, on Saturday, which was great, and on Sunday it had gotten quite a bit clearer. At any rate I proceeded to land another 6, but must have missed at least 3 time that on strikes myself, which I immeadiately shared with my son, so that he didn't feel bad. ( I was making excuses for myself, and have concluded that part of my problem was that I had on a 15' leader from my last trip to the Holston) and alot of that bank fishing under a tree is short soft casting. At any rate the beetle fishing is on, and it is fun, and can be very challenging.
