Anyone fished the Smith lately?
Going in the next week or so and would appreciate any help on patterns, techniques, etc.
Thanks!

Re: Smith River
depending on the releases: if they shut the water off about 5pm catch it as its falling. Go to the special regs area and use a 14-16 tan caddis. Fish until you can't see you fly and you should do well. You will not catch anything much over 13 inches.

Re: Smith River
Bob,
the Sulphurs are still coming off, the best fishing is during the week, falling water after the evening release. Otherwise, the best fishing is on cloudy days. On sunny days you'll find decent fishing early until the fog burns off, then again in the evening and usually right at dusk if its been hot. During the midday hours nymphing the runs with small pheasant tails size 18-20, Quasimodo(an umpqua pattern that's essentially a flashback pheasant tail on a curved hook), or my own creation the orange thorax pheasant tail nymph. Midday fishing is also pretty good with BWO dries size 20-24, Adams parachute #20, and assorted terrestrials (size 12,14 Beetles and ants).

Re: Smith River
Bob,
Corp of Engineers release schedule # is 276 629-2432.
They usually stick to it pretty well. If they are releasing it takes the water approx 1hr 15min to reach spec regs area, about 2hrs to reach the lower regs area, 3hrs to the library, and about 4 hrs and a few minutes to the lower bridge near the CVS off 57.

Re: Smith River
Bob
I sell these patterns via my site
www.jeffreywilkinsflyfishing.com
Also, I have other Smith R. specific patterns, both emergers, dries, nymphs, and some that are specifically for the hatches that come off there.

Re: Smith River
Bob,
you can view this fly, in the dun stage, via this link :

Some of the earlier posts have a stream sample of nymphs taken back in the spring.

Re: Smith River
If you have trouble catching fish on the Smith, I would definately try Jeff's flies. This is great river once you figure it out. Most fishermen give up after several trips becsause they say there are not any fish in there. I must say though, I am seeing fewer fish now than I have in the past. It makes me wonder if the special regs section is getting poached. During the suplher hatch I am used to seeing heads popping up constantly. Now I am seeing fewer and fewer when the hatch is its heaviest.
