Vise recommendation

Jeff,

Can you recommend a good vise? Should I get a C-Clamp or pedastal? What are the benefits of each?

Re: Vise recommendation

Depends upon what you are tying, but if its trout patterns and only occasionally big stuff I'd go the Renzetti route. It has a very small head, meaning extra working room on the smaller hooks. Still it has ample holding power for most of the big stuff too, up to 4/0 in fact, but most folks stay with 2/0 and smaller.
I'd go with the pedestal personally. With a C-clamp you are limited by the size table surface the clamp will clamp to. I tie commercially, I tie for fun too, and with a ped base I can tie anywhere. The only limitation I see is that with the smaller Traveler Series and Saltwater Traveler Series the bases are lighter, and if you are tying with deer hair (hair spinning requires lots of torque on the thread, hook, and vise) the C-clamp is a more stable base. But that would be the only time I'd see a real advantage for it. I guess too there's the weight argument in terms of traveling with it.
If it were me I'd go ped base for sure and you can always get an inexpensive C-clamp afterward if you decide you want one.
