Final Fantasy XI
Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has played and owns FFXI, 'cos it looks really good... Just wondering of the opinions of actual players, opposed to the biassed mags i read. ^^ Anyway, I've heard alot of things about it, like how hard it is to earn money, the battles are hard, etc... And also it's 13 bucks a month... Just wondering to se if it's worth the buy. ^^

I played FFXI for a few months on the PS2 (woo woo! Hard drive!) and it played pretty nice, looked pretty sweet on there.
The PC version is supposed to look nicer if you have a VERY GOOD Video card.
Gameplay... is mixxed.
I started spending more time with Dottie, so I stopped playing it after a couple of months. It's one of those games you really should stick with a LOT if you're gonna get it. it's not something to play 'now and then'.
It REALLY helps to have friends on the same server and in the same time zone who can play with you. My friends were on different schedules, never could match up to play. Otherwise it's best to have really good social skills so you can make new friends and join other parties, cuz if you're not in a party you're gonna die... a lot.
Money gets easier at higher levels, there's lots of ways to make money, but you don't always need to. You can get by with the minimal stuff, but it does help to stock up on things (especially stuff to avoid monsters!) Fishing (at higher levels) is supposed to be good. Mining is supposed to be getting crowded (check out Real Life Comics for why). easy way at lower levels is to go on missions and they'll give you some good rewards.

It's a really good site and helped me avoid the stupid cheap quests and get the better ones... but don't miss the cheap ones either! You wanna build up your fame by redoing some of them. Fame is good.
Overall, if you like games like that (Everquest-like games) and have the time to spend building up your chars, then go for it.
If it takes you 6 months to play thru FFX, then no. And it's not like other final fantasies. It HAS a storyline, but it's not storyline driven like the others.
Skip the guidebook, check the site I gave you and be sociable are my main bits of advice.
Oh, and everyone loves a white mage in their party, but they take FOR-FRIGGIN-EVER to level up. Black mages are good for destruction, but they tend to die. Red mages are a decent mix, but master at nothing. Monks suck.

Oh no, there's all kinds of other classes and races... But those seem to be the most popular besides the usual fighters.
Just way too many for me to go into offhand.

I used to play, back when it was released in North America for the PC. I played it for about 2 months, until I got sick of having to group up with people to do anything. Everyone would stereotype me cause I was a Tarutaru Dark Knight/Monk, say I sucked and just leave me out of parties.
I'll tell you something, when you see a lvl 40/ lvl 20 Taru Dark Knight/Monk, you should KNOW the player knows what he or she is doing. I was outdamaging elves and galkas with my weapons AND magic...
That's one reason I quit, other was people are stupid and greedy. Once they leveled up, guess what ? They just HAD to leave to do homework/sleep/work. They'd just leave and then the whole group would fall apart, and you'd be stuck waiting 2 hours to find a party.
I've never hated a game with more passion. Stay away from it unless you want to wait for groups.

Damn, that is pretty high for that kinda char.
I had a Hume white mage. I made her female cuz I know there's lots of fanboys who like to give free stuff to the babe characters... and everyone likes to suck up to the white mages for free healing and protection spells.
...No, she wasn't a whore.
...Yes, I did name her Mara-chan.

I heard WHM had it pretty damned hard. Most of them would be treated like crap with Revive requests when you got to higher levels. I knew one WHM who was such a jerk.. Just because we didn't play the way HE wanted to, he insulted us, and left the group, and this was after a good hour of searching for a WHM. His parting words were something along the lines of: "Now none of you are gonna level up."

There's good people and bad people out there, in any game and any class.
When I was a White Mage, people were nice and helpful... tried to help me level up cuz they knew that in a bind a WM can save their ass bigtime.
But WM's are very hard to level up, there's almost NO attack power, so you have to fight LOTS of small enemies, or learn a few attack spells and waste your MP that people are counting on.
It's best to pair up with someone who can tank... they'll do most of the damage and you can get some of the benefit as you stay back and keep them alive.
...however, when you do that to certain classes, they automatically zero in on you when you cast a spell, so they'd better be fast, and you'd better be ready to run if some orcs start in on you.
and one more random thought...
Why the F**** are SHEEP so friggin hard? IT'S A SHEEP! BAAAAA! FRIGGIN BAAAAA!!! It's embarassing to be killed by a sheep... course, it's worse to get killed by the lil bunny-thingies.

Hehe.. Being killed by a bunny isn't as bad as an entire party of lvl 35's being killed by some little onion guy. It got really stupid later on when lvl 40s were fighting a single bat, and the bat would kill everyone off.
