Re: Fullmetal Alchemist

Comparing what they did to Cardcaptor Sakura and what has been done with Detective Conan can't even be put in the same catagory.

Cardcaptors was a complete departure from the original intent of the show. They skipped numerous episodes. Completely changed dialouge and the personalities of many of the main characters. It was an attempt to cash in on the "Collecting" craze with shows like Pokemon, but make it appeal slightly more to girls.

As for Conan, they changed the name to protect themselves from a possible lawsuit. The name changes for some of the characters might have been unessary, though honestly it does make it easier to keep track of things. Funimation also announced that on the dvds the subtitles will retain the original names. Honestly this is one of the best transfers of a popular series by a company like Funimation. If it aired anywhere else but adultswim we'd be having a hard time seeing, never mind solving, the daily murder or theft.

If you'd like to make a complaint about currently airing anime I point to One Piece, Tokyo Mew Mew, and Rave Master. All three have been edited for content and in the case of Tokyo Mew Mew had it's name changed a half dozen times and will eventually be released as Mew Mew Power for no seemingly obvious reason. Recently Tokyopop has said that the DVDs of Rave Master will be the straight TV broadcast with no subs. Yet again, I don't know why. I sincerly doubt the majority of their sales were going to be from hooked little 10-12 year olds with uptight parents.

Don't get me started on One Piece.. 4Kids has butchered that show. They editted Luffy's mouth for some bizare reason, and they're gonna have to cut entire arcs if they want it on Saturday morning TV (And the Arlong saga was such a good one).

I for one CANNOT watch dubbed anime. I get this feeling like I'm missing something when I see it. I know they changed things, I know those aren't the original voices, so I can't enjoy it. I'm even like that with video games.

I haven't seen any of One Piece or Tokyo Mew Mew on TV... they seem to put it on some crappy time and never advertise it here or something.

I saw Rave Master once... but since I haven't seen the sub, I can't compare... I have read the manga though.

Who was gonna sue Conan? THe Conan Doyle people, the Conan the barbarian people, or Conan O'Brian?

"Mew Mew Power" as they call it hasn't aired yet. Fox has such a bizaare schedual.. I haven't seen the dubbed One Piece, but all the OP sites I go to point out the edits. Last weeks episode they cut out the word "Anchor" on a young Luffy's shirt.

FMA should be airing on Adult Swim uh Nov 6th.. Dunno what day that is (working nights is really getting to me). From the trailers I've seen, I'm glad I don't get to see it dubbed. There's gonna be plenty of editting.. I'm not sure about CN, but during Adult Swim, do they let shows get away with exploding heads in a pretty realistic manner ?

It depends on what they show and how...

They've showed some stuff before that pushed some limits... and then they cut other stuff. Depends on the time slot. I really haven't checked into the series yet, so I dunno.

it also depends on how important to the plot it is... if they can get away with cutting it and still keep the story moving right, they probably will to keep it 'acceptable'. Blah.

Cartoon Network giveith... and they takeith away.

That's why I don't watch television anymore...0_0

CN is probably thinking to make FMA what Inu-Yasha was for them, but since IY is being taken off, they need something to refuel the program... So they can roll around in some more moey so they can butcher more anime for no real reason... 7_7

They probably think it will make them big bucks. It was one of the best animes in Japan this year, but that means nothing here. One Piece is one of the most popular animes there, and 4Kids must have shelled out tons of money for the license, but it's not going to do that well here. I don't see why these companies lack common marketting knowledge.

Adult Swim showed Trigun if I'm not mistaken.. Did they show the scene where Vash shot Legato in the head executioner style ?

Re: Fullmetal Alchemist

Trigun was shown completely unedited (except for a few changes in lines). Same for Full Metal Alchemist so far.

Opinions on the English FMA voices:

Edward: Doesn't feel right, however after the original performance I doubt 'anyone' would. Not horrible, but...just not right ;p

Al: This one's a toss up. The acting itself falls short of the Japanese version, however it sounds like they got an actual 8-10 year old boy to do the dub. That paired with the 'in armor' echo is reeeeaaallly creepy. You lose the sense of 'little boy trapped in armor' in the Japanese FMA somewhat quickly due to his intelligence and line delivery, but you can never forget with the English voice. Brrr...

Rose: Sounds like she's in her late 20s if not older. Ruins that feel of innocence and naivety.

Lust: Wow. I actually like this voice better then the first. ^_^ She delivers the lines perfectly and just as seriously, however her voice is sexier without it sounding like she's trying to do so. Mmmm...

Gluttony: Perfect switch. Exact same kind of voice and personality. I thought they'd pull a Majin Boo and give him that same annoying 2 year old kid voice. ;p

Anyway, those are the only characters that I've heard speak so far. ^_^ Hopefully they'll do everyone else justice as well.
