2 reasons to brag...

No.1 - Our eldest is back fully integrated into his classes and doing really well - we are so proud of him

No. 2 - He got a definite off for a university summer 6wk course in microelectronic engineering!! there are only 20 or so places and with his disability we weren't sure he'd get there but he did and we met the team today and they are wonderful - it's a lovely quiet campus, the professor is so laid back etc

Wow you have to be bursting at the seams with pride. 20 or so spots and he earned one of them that is absolutely fantastic. I hope that he is able to grasp just how cool that is- I don't think my boys would be able to. I am tickled pink for your family. Your going to have to keep us posted how it goes so we can cheer with you.

Thanks Lost - yes we're proud of him and actually of his science teacher who pulled me aside at the parent/teacher meeting (when I was being 'stoned' by all the other teachers) to say he'd never met or worked with a kid with the abilities of our lad and he'd just got news of this course and would we consider it. I think the university too is very open to special needs so were happy to give him a place (i'm sure they kept it specially for him) and without asking the disability officer spent a day with the course dept to go through Aspergers etc. She said many of the students as well as several professors in this uni are Aspies so she was v.familiar with their 'unique traits'. So just 6 more school days and then summer hols and then the course......he did over 4hrs revision tonight...all off his own bat...I WISH they could see how amazing he is.....

anyway fingers crossed he'll get through some if not all of the 6wks and we'll keep you posted. It starts on 02/July.

That's just wonderful. It sounds like chances are very good that he will do more than get through it, I hope he excels. They seem like they are aware and anxiously awaiting his arrival- :hooray

A bit of good news to share on my end. Justin gets his first evaluation this next Monday @ 2:15. Jimmy is going to take him, the place that handles the evaluations is just a few blocks away from where we live. They are actually recognized as taking folks in different degrees of need and helping them in ways that the general public just isn't made aware of. We were actually told of this place when Jimmy's new neighbor came over and introduced herself. A simple hello, welcome to the neighborhood (which is so rare in our town as of late) turned into something even more special than the kindness of an introduction.

She has a daughter, early teens who is mentally retarded, she also has I believe Jimmy said a heart issue. She explained to Jimmy everything starts with an evaluation and they have resources to handle pretty much anything that becomes diagnosed at the evaluations. They have a huge network of doctors, therapists, the ability to help with educational needs, job placement. If there would be the need for a person to get disability they assist with that. They help with mainstreaming. She said from what she knows of the place and from the different people she has spoke with- she has yet to hear of one story that didn't have a wonderful ending. We are so excited. Nervous, we hope this is the right choice, but if it isn't we'll keep looking. Jimmy spoke with a lady from there today for about 45 minutes. She is very confident they are able to assist, help and improve things for Justin. We are so excited.

The appointment is at 2:15 he asked how I thought he should handle Justin... I said I personally wouldn't tell him until the morning of. Hey Justin we have an appointment at 2:15 please have yourself ready by 1:30. Afraid if he tells him tonight Justin will stew about this to no end until Monday. We are excited and feel it will take forever until Monday gets here- I wouldnt' want Justin to be in panic about it for what like to him would feel forever as well. I did tell Jimmy I was going to run this past you guys to see what you suggest- just because we really are unsure. And every though Justin is an adult they encourage Jimmy to sit in on the session so that Justin is a bit more at ease. Would you tell him ahead of time and explain Jimmy will be with him every step of the way or would you wait until the day gets closer to let him know what to expect?

Good days for us both and better ones coming

Well you have to suss out Justin I guess. We've always told our lad as soon as we know about these things. We are very matter-of-fact about things and just say 'you'll be meeting 'so & so' on monday - they're just going to chat to you to see how we can all help you in...' We wouldn't wait till the same morn as that would throw our guy out - if it was for us I would say it today, a couple of reminders over the w/end and then off we'd go on monday. BUT all these kids are individuals and you guys know him best.

That's great news! Definately a proper and full ass is the way to go!

Re: 2 reasons to brag...

Well....I just had to share....our DS is coping wonderfully at the moment. I guess these small things are the norm for most 14yr olds but for our boy its just so amazing.....he is enjoying his school holidays (normally hates hols as routine is too loose for him), is making great eye contact even last night with his summer tutor who he hasn't seen in a year - he laughed and chatted with her easily - and today is out shopping with his dad who he told he would have a look around himself for music (mad into pop/rock) and that his dad could meet him later in the shop!! Also, this morning he came downstairs not knowing we'd planned for him to go shopping and was dressed in the same old clothes he'd worn for 3 days. Normally changing clothes is a problem "who cares what I wear, I don't care" etc. This morning I said "do you think that's the best thing to wear going to town?", he replied "Well seeing as I wore it for the last 3 days probably not I'll change after breakfast"....well you coulda knocked me down with a feather!! I was expecting the normal freak out. Then he came down .....and he was co-ordinated!! again - a miracle.....even he laughed when I pointed it out!!

Hey - tomorrow he could be tearing the house down in a tantrum but the last few wks have been heaven! His thyroid meds were upped just before our hols about 4wks ago and seem to have really kicked in to help him feel better......long may it last!!
