Had to put this thread in...

Because sometimes I am stressed to the maxxx. Teens who have alot of friends who like it here, a baby, daycare and a very stressful job keep me pretty muched maxxed out. And my family is as nutty as anybody else's. Everybody has their stuff about their family. There are sometimes I say quite frankly family... you can live without them :). All of that coupled with the stuff my friends are going through that I am involved in - sometimes things just get to be too much.

Recently things got a little crazy with the kid's father, he decided he would like to have our oldest (they were making plans for December of this year) and our youngest and I just had to say I am sorry you can't take care of yourself you can't have the kiddos. If you haven't had the experience of fighting with an alcoholic (be thankful) you can imagine those were fighting words to him. So things have elevated to a new level here for me. Not one to doctor, only when pregnant, I called my pcp who didn't even have a file on me and scheduled an appointment. I hadn't doctored with her since we lost our first little girl, so even though she knew some of the background when I refreshed her memory it had been many, many years since I saw her. Well I spilled my guts about everything. layed it all out there and asked what my options were... we decided we would try an antidepressant, Lexapro. Not one for pills, but have been taking this for 3 weeks. No real improvement yet, but it was just explained to me this week I am right at the time it takes that it has built up enough to work. So at this time in my life call me a Rolling Stone, because I have a "Mother's Little Helper". If it helps level things out I will be satisfied. If it doesn't I will try other ways. I also asked my oldest's therapist if the couch was big enough for 4, he assured me it was :) I figure it can't hurt at this point.

Hey, 1lost1. Sorry to hear about the stress. I'm glad you confided in your doctor. The Lexapro does indeed take time to build up in order to work effectively; however, be away that not every anti-depressant works for everybody. Sometimes you have to find the one most effective for your chemistry. After my mom passed away and I got married (all within 6 months of each other), I too felt depressed and the doctor I saw out me on Zoloft which did not work at all for me, but has worked for other. Lexapro is a newer drug, but just monitor it.

Also, I would put two other suggestions out there for you if you are unsure about taking the prescription drugs. Of course, diet and exercise are very important, with the latter offering stress-relieving benefits.

Secondly, if you prefer a more natural way to combat stress, the use of St. John's Wort as been proven to combat mild-moderate stress. I would discuss taking this with your doctor before deciding and not take it concurrently with the Lexapro.

I just finished a phytotherapy class in my master's and these supplements are indeed regulated by the FDA and FTC- although many docs believe otherwise- and have research to back up effectiveness. Obviously, prescription medicine is the standard of treatment with more moderate-severe stress, but if you do not feel the drugs are working well, you may want to discuss using natural alternatives with your physician. Again, St John's Wort is recommended for mild-moderate depression and should be cleared with your physician first, since they know your whole health history.

And remember, any physician/practitioner worth their salt will discuss this with you and take suggestions seriously. I say these things as a professional nurse and patient advocate and want the best for anyone seeking or needing medical care :) Ok, off my soapbox- heehee! Just some ideas to keep in mind. Let me know if I can help at all and we're all here for ya! :) (I need that love smiley again)

I am so glad you posted. I did actually speak with the doc about something natural, because my taking pill days ended after highschool... She said because of everything going on right now that she felt the lexapro would be the place to start, we would slowly build up the dose, I started with 10 mg and now take 20. We would hope the 20 does the trick. She also explain this might not be the one for me, but hoped that it would be. Once things settled a bit we would then back down from it and go with a more natural alternative. She said she doesn't like to see people on this stuff for a lifetime- she likes to think of it as more help for a certain time span as opposed to a permanant coping method. Her saying that did make me feel a bit better about things. She didn't specifically mention St. John's, but she did speak a bit about getting me through this time and then hoping to take a more natural approach. I don't really know this gal, but so far I am very comfortable with what she has told me.

I am going to look into the St. John's thanks a bunch.
(as a sidebar... I have to find smilies)

She sounds like a very conscientious and open doctor. Thats wonderful! Sounds like she has you on the right track.

Check out the American Botanical Council's site www.herbalgram.org for information. You may have to join- I got in due to school- but its chock full of valuable, up-to-date info. ;)

Check before you try the St Johns Wort Lost if there's any interactions tween that & the Lexapro. Also with St Johns, it causes skin sensitivity to sunlight, so make sure & use sun-block. :)

I not too long ago had read on a 'depression web site' that it was now considered safe to use st john's wort with SSRIs - as it was found st john's wort did not effect serotonin levels in the brain

however - definitely not a bad idea to check things out first
I myself at one point was taking maybe 3 different antidepressants at the same time - this under advice of a psychaitrist - never experienced 'serotonin syndrome' which I believe was the concern of combining st john's wort with the anti-depressants

Hope you both are feeling better. I've never had depression myself. It's one of those things that most folk can't spot as we instinctively try to to hide it from others, from what I've been told mind.
A good dose of Fr Ted is my prescription if one is feeling down!:ROFL

You should not take these two concurrently. Check with your doctor as to which to take if you are interested in SJW. Good suggestion about the sunblock Wolf!

I too am on anti/dep and have been for a long time now. I'm worried about the amount of time I've been on them but my GP says it is fine.
I am in the process of trying to sort my life out and have been depressed & unhappy for a long time. :|

I am also starting to have some councelling and hopefully I will get through all this. I get very low and have discovered that I need to stay away from forums when VERY stressed as I say some things in the wrong way and get into trouble. :(

Hope you are feeling the effects of your meds now though in a good way.
