Thumb Sucked to Blister
Olivia sucks her thumb, she does it whie sleeping in the night. She doesn't do it any other time so it is a bit difficult for me to break the habit that's another thread though.
Last night she apparently really had at it. This morning is was a rather large blister. It actually opped on its own. I used peroxide left it air out ( I didn't take her out to play to keep it clean. Nap time came along I put a bandaid on it, only because I didn't want her sucking on it, large amount of loose skin left when it popped and a bit of fluid. After nap the blister reinflated. It popped while in the tub and it looks very irritated, red and angry. Took her up to the er we waited 2 hours she didn't care for it. When I asked if they had an estimated wait time the lady said she thought at least an additional 2 hours as they were busy. I opted to leave, she was upset, she was also crying and it was very hectic there.
I am a bit worried infection is setting in as it does look so angry. Anybody know of anything I could do to get us through the night until I can get her into the ped's office tomorrow? Keeping it clean, also not letting her outside today but it does look so angry and sore. Can a bit of neosporin be used considering that she is a night time thumb sucker?
* 3rd inflatiion has happened. Should i pop this on the side or just let it be? And oes anyone know if she will get sick if this pops through the night with her thumb in her mouth?

Re: Thumb Sucked to Blister
Don't pop it. Although I was tempted to say put some triple antibiotic (i.e. neosporin ) on it, try to wait until the pediatrician sees her. If you are wondering about her ingesting the neosprin, you can always call poison control and ask- they are used to those questions. :) Hope she feels better!

Re: Thumb Sucked to Blister
I didn't pop after it inflated the 3rd time. So when I got her ready for bed while we were doing her teeth I filled the sink with some water and she "played" in it for a bit. I did feel I should put a band aid on for bed, just to discourage her sucking and and I was a little uncomfortable about that popping in her mouth. I don't think it would have hurt her, but yuck.
Her ped's office has an hour tomorrow before business hours when you can take a child for a check without an appointment, so I am going to see how it looks in the am and most likely take her. I can't imagine she will wake up and its going to be gone.
I told Alex it will be my luck she'll choke on the dang band aid, odd stuff r us here.
I didn't figure the neosporin would get into where it looked so angry because it has reinflated so I didn't use it. We just made sure it was clean and dry prior to bed and protected. And it doesn't hurt her so I think we will be fine until morning.
Thanks, Red :) appreciate the help.

Re: Thumb Sucked to Blister
I was a BIG TIME thumb sucker. I won't even tell you how old I was before I gave it up (seriously, though...I was really really old).
I never sucked it until it blistered. I have a memory of it feeling all drenched and swollen (like you are underwater for too long), but not blistered. You would have thought she'd stop before it caused pain.
Any chance she could have hurt it another way?

Re: Thumb Sucked to Blister
My son who is now 17 actually had the same thing happen to him as a child, he wasn't a thumb sucker. I am thinking they called it a hydrocell. His actually came from nowhere one night and we noticed while he was in the tub. I remember it was a Saturday night, I freaked, couldn't get a hold of his ped and we took him to the ER. Our Er said it was common. Because it was different body parts and because I knew she sucked he thumb, and because it got so angry looking I panicked again with her. We didn't get into our ER, they messed up admission paperwork a few times, and she was at wits end, not in pain- just tired and nothing there to entertain her. I did talk to her ped. He had said if it didn't heal, bring her in, but it did heal. She still sucks it too by the way- but it's in full recovery. I was a thumb sucker too- for many years passed what I should have...
Now she will be 2 in Sept. neither of my boys were thumb suckers, so I haven't had to deal with this before. When I ask her what she is doing with her thumb when I lay her down at night, she takes it out of her mouth... She knows I think. I don't embarrass he about this, but I really would like her to quit. She only does this at night in her crib.
Has anyone handled breaking this habit and how so. I hate the thoughts of putting that horrible tasing stuff on her thumbs (I remember it well) but I don't know of any other way to go about it. I am speaking with her ped in September for her 2 year appointment. Anybody have any ideas what advice he is going to give me? How did you guys break the habit for your little ones?

Re: Thumb Sucked to Blister
We had a thumb sucker who stopped in the first year herself but.....her mommy...ie moi.....well I sucked my thumb till almost 30yrs old! Then my lifelong teddy-sheep called 'spotty' (wolf will remember him) disintegrated in the washing machine...my husband watched as I bawled (at this stage I was a mom of 2 myself)....so after a while the thumb sucking stopped. Then when i was preg with our 4th my sis sent me 'dog' - a wee soft dog with silky ears and now I always have him in bed and while I don't suck my thumb I hold the ears and kinda tickle my fingers with them as I read (god - sounds wierd!) - even on the w/end away dog came along. I firmly believe that some of us have sensory issues and that's why we suck our thumbs or bite nails or have comfort blankets (or dogs!). To me it's nothing to worry about (tho' thankfully I managed to stop biting my nails @ 23yrs old as that even to me is a bit gross!) really - if one of ours sucked his/her thumb I'd actually be kinda happy! So for me I wouldn't be stopping a 2yr old but that's just wierd old me.....

Re: Thumb Sucked to Blister
I am a blanket fan myself...
If it is a heatwave I cannot sleep without one- I wouldn't dream of it- I have to have a blanket at all costs regardless if I am sweating bullets I will be wrapped up. I actually get uneasy inside if I see my boys or the baby, anyone for that fact sleeping without one.
I love how dog - went on vacation with you, too cute.
My Dad had "Bunskers" a rabbit that slept between his legs well into his teens that met his demise in the washer and I would bet he did go into full blown tears when it happened. Him and Mom will still talk about Bunskers and they have been divorced for many years- so I know its something they talked about frequently when they were married.
At this point I just couldn't bring myself to put something on Olivia's thumb. I do worry about her teeth, but I am hoping the habit just falls wayside.

Phew! Someone only slightly older than I was when I stopped (seriously...a week before my wedding)...I had a "little pillow"...I drug it with me everywhere,
I see no reason to make kids quit. It's a comfort thing. Most kids need braces anyway, so I can't personally see way I'd use this excuse
I made my son throw away his binky at 5 years old. It really wasn't such a big deal to let him keep it...it was more about me being embarrassed he had it. I regret it now.
Now, I'm letting my 5 year old daughter keep hers as long as she wants. She only uses it when she's relaxing with TV or going to sleep.
The baby will most assuredly be a thumb sucker, though. The SECOND the binky leaves her mouth, the thumb goes right in there.

Re: Thumb Sucked to Blister
My 28 yr old sister still has the shreds of her 'badie' (blanket) - you know the crochetted ones with the silky edges - she has the silky edge with bits hanging off and when in her apartment with flatmates has to hold it while watching tv etc - she just brought it out and told them she'd be doing this and they'd just have to get over it! LOL!
Oh yes, dog goes everywhere - my 5yr old even reminded me not to forget him and he will come to spain with us next week also for a nice warm holiday!
