Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
Scarlett turns 5 months old today....and she's trying to wean from the breast. :(
She was exclusively bottle fed breast milk for the first 2-3 weeks, as she was in the NICU for the first week and couldn't figure out how to nurse after that for a few more weeks.
After she got the hang of it, she would get one bottle a night, so I could have a glass of wine after dinner.
All has been well until the last couple weeks. She barely nurses at all...MAYBE 5 minutes a side. She's still has plenty of wet diapers and gaining weight steadily, so I thought "No worries".
The last couple days, she moans and fusses the entire time I try to feed her. She refused to eat for almost an entire day, until I broke down and gave her a bottle (it had seriously been like 8 hours without eating, although I had tried all day). Hubby thinks it's time to throw in the towel and move to the next step. I want to keep pumping at least, to keep my supply steady, in case she changes her mind...but I can barely pump ONE ounce after 30 minutes on a double pump (one ounce TOTAL, not per breast).
We think we'll ttc within the next year, but she may very well be my last, because hubby and I have such a hard time conceiving. I'd like her to be a baby a little longer...
Any advice?

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
My friend has a baby girl 5 months younger than Olivia, she also has 2 older children at home. I am thinking it was her Amanda who at one point refused and she was pretty young (pre- teeth age, I know that isn't much to go by but it was 14 years ago)... She had to finally throw in the towel as well. Her newest one though is still doing her night feedings and she is 17 months.
Maybe her little choppers are beginning to come in and the bottles just feel more comfortable. I know once Teresa's little Amanda made up her mind there was no changing it and she had her share of sniffles and colds but she was by mo means a sickly child and her academics are fine too.
It was devastating to Teresa, she was heartbroken, but Amanda never missed a beat. And Teresa just filled the void (to an extent, I would guess~ because she was so terribly upset about it~ in different ways.
Hopefully someone who has had experience with this will have the right words. Do you have a local Le Leche League in your area? They might be helpful too.

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
Found these links at Sunny Brooks ~ various bf links and resources, not sure if any of these will have information or you, but when I saw the thread I saw of you and Scarlett
Probably be easier for me to just link you to them. It's a new board starting out about all things Mom. Kim Jill and Amanda from freebie friends have started it.

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
Thanks Onesie!
I would rather not quit....but you know...I gotta do what's right for her. The amount of pee in her diaoers has doubled or tripled since we started full time on formula. * sigh* Maybe she really wasn't getting enough.

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
Don't be too hard on yourself ~ you can just look at that picture and tell she is happy and healthy (and sooo beautiful)
I know Teresa was absolutely devastated~ she called in tears so many times, my heart broke for her, but her and Mic (my nickname for Amanda) found a different closeness & and those two are thick as thieves even all these years later they have an amazing bond.
And like I told Teresa who also would on occasion have a drink and pump it out to dispose of when life hands you lemons... slice them and use them as a garnish & now enjoy an extra drink because you can do so
we're here for you if you just need someone to listen ~ I am a pro at it as Teresa cave me strenuous OJT. We've all got pretty decent ears here and know you're heart is hurting over this and we'll support ya all the way

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
When I had my son, he was 10.1 lbs and required supplemental bottles since I couldn't produce enough milk quick enough right after having him to satisfy him. Being an RN with a background in peds, I know all the benefits of breast feeding, but it just didn't work for us. He was such a veracious eater that he made my nipples bleed and I had to give it up anyway. During that healing/recovery time, my milk came in but he had already been taking formula successfully so we continued that. I must admit he has been nothing but happy and healthy on the formula and it was easier on me physically too. Not everyone can successfully breastfeed and thats ok. It is a hard decision to end, but never feel bad for doing what is in the baby's best interests- that is the most important thing :)

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
I've been told to take Fenugreek and pump like crazy.
I rented an industrial pump from the hospital, but it isn't any better than my little dinky one from Target.
I am getting more milk after 2 days of Fenugreek, but now she's gotten used to the instant gratification of the bottle....grrr!
I'm not really a drinker, (I'm one that doesn't enjoy not being in control...and I get a buzz after just one glass of wine...lightweight!) so we'll be getting that feeding in (although the pediatrician told me I could breast feed even if I have a glass of wine every once in a while.)

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
I know Teresa's ped has also assured her if she has a glass of wine on occasion she doesn't need to dispose of the milk, she just does. I hope the Fenugreek works, it's sounds like that was a good tip.

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
Fennel tea is excellent for increasing milk supply! Sorry hadn't read this earlier.
Get the fennel tea seeds in any health shop, you put 2 teaspoons into a teapot (or 1 into a cup), pour on boiling water, leave for 5 or 6 mins and then drink. It is naturally quite sweet (tastes like liquorice) but you can add honey or sugar if you want. Driink 3 - 5 cups a day ( i love it so never minded but if you're not keen try to do 3 if you can)
Also folks, alcohol takes hours to get into the milk so if you drink at night it's in the feed next morning - not that it worried me at all. I was pretty abstinent for the entire pregnancies so never worried about a glass or 2 of wine the odd evening and I fed all ours for YEARS!
The fennel thing really works by the way - once you feel the milk increasing (this can be quite quick sometimes) stop and bring it down to 1 a day or none if you are totally sorted as if you continue you can end up wtih HUMUNGOUS gazonga's and too much milk!! The other bonus it has is that its very soothing on babies tummy and they get it through the milk so can help with collicky babies
If a baby has severe colic (even a tiny teeny one) you make up a cup as above, take out a teaspoonfull and dilute with 2 more teaspoons full of cooled boiled water adn then give to baby on the spoon. Most babies lap it up and they burp/fart like crazy after giving relief.
just my 1c worth there!

Re: Breast vs. Bottle Feeding
Also yes the tiny pumps aren't worth anything. Rent of buy (if you plan carrying on and having another) a good electric 2 sided pump - they are amazing! I returned to work when our smallest was 12 wks - it was the first time I was working after the babes as hubby and i swapped. We got this great pump and I started at about 6wks pumping/freezing. Well because of it our guy was b/milk only till he was over 6mths and then still b/milk only with solids till 1yr. Once he reached the year I just fed him mornings and evenings/night as I reckoned I'd done the important bit by then. A good pump (Medela is a great one) is worth its weight in gold
