I'm gonna be an Auntie!!!
Today's my dad's birthday...when I got home my sister told me to look at the card she got for him...it said "Happy Birthday Grampa"!!!!!!!!!!! As soon as I saw it I was so excited!!! My big sister's having a baby! The due date is December 15th :)
So for you mothers out there, I have a couple questions...
a) What do/did you what from your family during your pregnancy?
b) What are the ingredients for an awesome baby shower?

Re: I'm gonna be an Auntie!!!
My oldest Zak was born December 14. For me living in PA it worked out pretty well because I got through the worst of the summer before being too pregnant.
a. My cirmustances were a bit non traditional to some (as I wasn't married). I was also younger when Zak was on his way & I just wanted emotional support. Planned or not finding out you are pregnant / soon to be a Mom if adopting - is a life changing event. Very emotional time. Just be there for her and roll with things as they come. Hopefully the pregnancy is a breeze for her and she enjoys every second, but she might not. Just try and be understanding. When she needs someone to talk to be there and when she needs a bit of space allow her to have it and don't be offended. Her emotions will likely be all over the place.
b. not my strong point, sorry. I am sure though there will be a few on here who have some great suggestions.
Please keep us posted along the way, Your Auntness :). Your sister's little bundle is the first official baby on the way for us here. It'll be fun to hear about all that's happening.
Wouldn't feel right if I didn't say too... please make sure she finds a great ob/gyn and gets to all of her appointments. It's so very important.

Re: I'm gonna be an Auntie!!!
A) I would say I just wanted people to check on me. Early on, she may feel like its silly, but later, towards her due date, she will want to know people are looking out for her. Also, help her with the plan of what will happen if her water breaks unexpectedly etc.
B) Number one- Surprise. My hubbie and the neighbor ladies were in on the ruse and I had no idea. It was a couples shower, with males and females invited. And please, no humiliating games like "lets measure how big the mom-to-be is" or the like. Make the games more about babies or have everyone write a piece of sage advice in a book and give it to the new mom. Also, try to hol dit in her 6-7 month since she will be feeling great them. After that, you just start to get big and feel even bigger and uncomfortable. Finally, have her register, register, register. Babies R Us is a great place (not sure if you have that up there). It helps to go with the mom and have her pick out just what she wants so she can get ready for her baby her way. It also lets her get the gifts she really wants without having to worry about returning them after the baby is born.
How's are those for a couple of ideas? heehee! ;) :hrts

Re: I'm gonna be an Auntie!!!
those were great red, I love the idea of a couples shower, I haven't been to one of those. The book of advice would be a cherished keeper. I am definately going to keep that in mind for the next shower I hear of.

Re: I'm gonna be an Auntie!!!
Congrats to you and your sister!
Emotional support is great, but honestly the thing I appreciated most was help around the house--laundry, cooking, etc... I was so tired and so sick that I didn't want to get off the couch a lot of the time. Even when I wasn't sick, I was tired and huge. Someone cooking for my family was nice, and my husband taking over the laundry was great too.
As for the shower, the funniest (and most fun) game I've ever played was "guess the candy bar." You take diapers and melt a different chocolate candy bar in each one. Then you number the diapers and pass them around. You have to guess which kind of candy bar is in each diaper.
My first shower was a surprise, and I have to say that I enjoyed it more than the planned one. My friend who hosted it was from the Phillipines and she made it a Philipino style party (the food was amazing!). Apparently karaoke is big there, so we did karaoke. I nearly put myself into labor laughing at it.

Re: I'm gonna be an Auntie!!!
Mrs. D the philipino party sound so snazzy elegant like. How neat that would have been. And yes help around the house was so nice. Even something small was something huge.
Great suggestions :)
