Vicks Vapo Rub & Coughs- Amazing!!
I just read the slickest article on another board and I'll have to post the board's name at a later time, because it escapes me at this second...
It was a canadian study and it said that when a child (I would imagine an adult too) has a cough rubbing the feet with vicks and covering them with socks will quiet the cough. They have studied it and it is proven effective, even more so than over the counter cough meds. I am definately going to try it. My youngest one has actually been coughing through the night (nothing serious enough to doctor or even give meds for). My 14 year old is coughing too, but I don't stand a shot a getting him to try it.
I'll let you know if it works because I will be trying it tomorrow night.

Well everyone is coming down with our normal change of season cold (confirmation that Olivia wasn't switched at birth, as she is coming down with her 1st one with the rest of us :) )
Anyways she was mean as a snake tonight due to not feeling well (additional confirmation of genetics) and there was nodoby getting near her feet, she wanted her baby and her bed.
Operation Vicks Vapo Rub aborted until her mood changes or cough disrupts sleep.
She has her 1.5 year check up Friday at 2:00 I believe, so I am going to ask her ped if he has heard anything about the study, I am curious about it. Sure its safe, but curious about the findings.

I read it on another board and I am actually looking for it because I would like to look into it before speaking with the ped. So if I am able to find where I was at I sure will. I do know it was Canadian and they specifically mentioned Vick's product by name.

Red I found it, this is what is posted on the Good Vibrations board... Indica posted it. I also asked the ped Friday at Olivia's visit, he is looking into it and will let me know when we go back in Sept. what all he has found. He did say he was sure it absolutely could not hurt to try, provided she wasn't allergic to something in Vick and she isn't. He said just off the top of his head its probably something like using the soap in bed for leg cramps, not sure why it works but it does.
It works 100% of the time although the scientists at the Canada
Research Council aren't sure why.
To stop nightime coughing in a child (or adult, as we have found out
personally), put Vicks Vapourrub generously on the bottom of the feet
at bedtime, then cover with socks.
Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes
and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief.
It works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even
very stong prescription cough medicines. In addition, it is extremely
soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.
The head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings
on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the
effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as
compared to alternative therapies like accupressure. I Just happened to
tune in to A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough
medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical
makeup of these strong drugs so, I listened.
It was a surprising finding and found to be more effective than
prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, and in addition, to have a
soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep
soundly.
Lolly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and
persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that
it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a
few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, ( incredibly annoying!)
every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough free for
hours every night that she used it.
So, if you have Grandchildren, pass it on, if you end up sick, try it
yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect.

Interesting. I think I'll email my professor for complementary medicine and ask her if she has heard or knows more about why and how it works. Thanks for the update!
