Getting ready for kindergarten
So... I had to sign up my son for kindergarten last week (anyone on Talk Lost knows this) and it was more emotional then I thought it would be. :( I was all prepared with documents, info, etc and once it was over, I realized the importance and significance of it all. Not only that, all of a sudden , the elementary school looked HUGE! I am excited for him, because he is definitely ready, loves school and making friends, and will have a great time; but, I also worry about things like bullies, etc and the fact i think I'll miss him more than I realized. I used to look forward to having him go all day to school so I wouldn't have to entertain him as much- which is getting harder and harder- but now, I don't know. Stupid, I know. Well, we meet his new teacher and some of his classmates this Tues night (Jump Into Kindergarten program), so we'll see. I guess what I have learned from this is its not good to be having "that monthly visitor" during a major change like this- lol lol ;)

Re: Getting ready for kindergarten
Jump into kindergarden, that's a very slick idea. We didn't have that when the boys went to school, I just stood there with the box of kleenex and came totally unglued :) as they loaded onto the cheese (that's what we call the bus), riding the cheese. Hopefully they will have a program like that when Olivia is ready to go.
No matter how you look at it- it's an emotional time- it really is, but the fun that comes after you get over the intial shock and change is so worth it. They get so excited about their class and friends and teacher and the projects - I love their projects.
I found out this year they now get homework in kindergarden. The gal I work with her son goes. He is learning to tell time, values of money, sight words & he brings homework home. It wasn't like that way back when. Much to both of our surprises he is doing really well - we couldn't believe when they started getting into the money but he just sucks everything in like a little sponge. He was the youngest of 5, she works full time so she didn't have the time to devote to him that she had with the others but he loves it. Hopefully your little guy will to.

Re: Getting ready for kindergarten
I've heard that as well about kindergarten. We've been really blessed since the preschool my son attended has already introduced alot of these concepts to them- time, measurement They are doing that now), money (I actually taught some of that), and even solids and liquids! Not sure they "got" all of it, but at least they were introduced to it. My son really really loves to read and amazingly, is reading on about a 2nd grade level right now. We didn't push him or coach him, it just came naturally. He is currently reading the "Captain Underpants" series of books- stories filled with poo-poo, pee-pee, booger humor, etc for little boys and he loves them! I must admit, they are kinda funny. :) I'll hear him laughing and laughing just reading them. :) He'll do well in kindergarten as long as the teachers can challenge him I think- very much like his daddy that way.

Re: Getting ready for kindergarten
You will be fine! Every year now when Vanessa starts a new grade (she will be entering the 2nd grade), I get emotional. I was emotional yesterday when I picked her up for the last time as a 1st grader! I can't believe how time flies with her. Wow!

Re: Getting ready for kindergarten
I am a public school teacher, though my area of specialty is with English language learners. However, I worked with prek for five years, prior to doing what I do now, and am also a mother of a just-finished-kindergarten kid, with another close to starting K, so I know how that all goes.
K is such a wonderful grade, because for the most part the children are happy, eager, and not jaded. And they love their teachers. Once K is done, in my professional experience, it's time for the real world. Due to testing the demands placed on first grade are excruciating. It's like kids can't even be kids anymore.

Re: Getting ready for kindergarten
It really seems to have changed from what I remember. Things have even changed considerably from when my sons went. The gal I work with has her 5th in kdg. this year and there was a lot of homework and alot of testing to see where he was at.
We have talked many times about children coming from homes where the parents don't parent for lack of a better term~ some just choose not to & there are others who have babies who can't read well or write. I don't know how a little one would make it from what my friend said if they weren't read to and had the basics as far as alphabet, numbers colors shapes and the like. Her son was expected to know all of that stuff and I know there are parents out there who don't teach their little ones that prior to school.

Re: Getting ready for kindergarten
Signed up my younger son for prek. (I put this is in the K thread because prek is to get them ready for K.)
He really wants to go. He says he wants to be a big boy like his brother. My heart always tugs thinking that. They're in such a hurry to grow up and do things. The program is only 1/2 day, but I know will do wonders for him.

Re: Getting ready for kindergarten
When I had the boys I was so against programs. Because of how things ended up I do have Olivia in daycare/ preschool on the days I don't work from home or don't take her to the office. She honestly loves her school. It has been such a wonderful experience.
While it's not pre-k as she is 2 it is kind of similar and I sure hope your little guy loves his place as much as Olivia loves hers.
They do grow too fast that's for sure but its so amazing we get to be a part of such a miracle.
You'll have to let us know how it goes
