Youth Sports Rant!

Ok, I just have to ***** about this. My 5 1/2 year old is playing t-ball this spring. While he gets bored (like they all do), I have been really ticked at the fact that there is a disregard for the Little League T-ball rules designed to protect the kids. The one that stands out is the fact that although SAFETY is supposed to come first, the rules state you cannot pitch to this group, and the batters and base runners must wear protective gear, most of the coaches disregard this. There is at least one team that pitches to their players and refuses to stop. But this is my real problem- many teams encourage the kids to throw the ball to first base after they field it and the base runners have no helmets on. I have seen kids get hit in the head (and coaches say "just shake it off") and alot of near misses. I worry because at age 5-6 years old, they do not have real control over their throws and do not have the judgment regarding how hard to throw it at certain distances (i.e. they throw it hard when only a couple of feet away). Heck, half the time the first baseman isn't looking either and has gotten hit in the face! It not only my son I worry about, but all the other kids as well. I spoke out last week at the game and you would think I was the biggest ***** ever because I voiced concerns over this. I must say we do play with the biggest bunch of rednecks you have ever seen!!! Sorry, I shouldn't say that, but its basically true. These parents all seem to be oblivious to the dangers throwing errant balls at close range can do and while they may not care, I don't want a child to suffer a brain injury and end up with more serious problems- especially my kid. I know I may seem over protective to some, but this is truly a blatant disregard for the rules of t-ball and I am very distressed over this. I think we may pull our son out since he is basically bored anyway, but I'm not sure. My husband is contacting the head of the rec dept tomorrow and I hope he'll help correct this, but I have low hopes. Am I out of line here? I am just so pissed about this whole thing and how these people treat these kids as expendable in a sense that I don't know if I can hold it in at the next game- argh! Any advice would be great.

We pulled out of baseball, I had to. Alex went to the er the first 4 practices. Stoved finger we thought it was broken. Cut twice and bled like crazy the 4th time, where I thought for sure there was no way in hell there could be a 4th he caught a line drive in the face the eye socket to be exact about it. There was honestly no regard for safety and kids were hurt frequently. My guy wasn't the only guy that needed the er.

On top of that the parents involved. Lets just say our group wasn't there for their kids to have fun, you would have thought it was Major League Baseball and their financial future's depended on the outcome. One Dad actually slapped his son on the pitching mound.

It just wasn't us and I felt bad pulling them, but I did it & we never really dabbled in sports again. It was an awful experience for us.

I really have sympathy for your situation. I am sure there are leagues, schools whatever that do it correctly for the good of the kids. We lived out in the middle of no man's land we didn't even have neighbor kids to play with, it was redneck country. I was raised there so I understand exactly what you are describing. Hopefully your husband will be able to get thing sorted, but I wouldn't actually hold my breath~ because those folks are honestly in a league of their own.

The mom at 5 at work has all of her in soccer all 5 play. A couple also play volleyball, baseball and football on top of it. She runs to several games every night of the week- the woman is honestly amazing. If you could hear the stories she can tell you about sports your hair would curl. Let us know how it works out.

OMG, did you hit the nail on the head! I think you are right- they honestly believe their kid is the next MLB star!! The thing is if kids get hurt playing, the love of the game disappears and even if they were the next big star, they would drop out before they got the chance and I don't blame them.

Nice to hear its happened to others. Its only been a problem with t-ball for us- soccer and basketball has been so much fun for him :)

there have been instances in the news regarding problem parents - I think a lot of leagues are really trying to address this issue

red - I don't think you are making too big a deal of this - definitely contact whoever is in charge see if it helps - and if nothing changes take your son out - you don't want him getting hurt and/or learning poor sportsmanship

When you have a second Red you'll have to update us on how it went when your husband called.

Well, he is stll trying to get in touch with this guy. He called 4 times yesterday and there was no answer so he's going to try again today or at least tomorrow. Rec director for the city and he has no voicemail- ugh! I would do it but, well, we live in the south and sometimes complaining about things like this is taken more seriously when a guy does it. Sad isn't it? And I am not one to shy away, so its doubly frustrating. I'll keep you updated but we are thinking of pulling him out or at least limiting the games. Thanks gals!

Red were you guys ever able to get a hold of the guy? Were you able to work something out or did you decide to pull out or limit games? Just curious.

Haven't gotten ahold of him yet, despite calling all week- what a loser. Little man has a game tomorrow night and I think we'll go and re-evaluate there. We're going to speak to his coach also. I'll let you know.

Never got a hold of this guy and from what I have learned other parents have tried with no success for years. Needless to say, we're done with t-ball for the season (thankfully) and we can look forward to soccer!!

well I am glad you guys have gotten through it. I thought about you the other night there was discussion on tv about aluminum bats and children- they are thinking of making it wooden only for safety and I wondered how you guys were getting along.

have fun at soccer. The gal I work with has 5 kids playing now (all at once) never saw a woman run like she does- she is amazing.
