All day Kindergarden
Ours schools are right on the brink of going to an all day kindergarden. To this point there were 2 sessions a day a morning and and afternoon.
Does anyone's little one attend all day kdg now and if so is it too much on them? The one gal I work with says she is certain when it's time for Livy to go it will be an all day session for her. She is pretty active with the school board so I know she is pretty certain of what she is telling me.

Re: All day Kindergarten
Hello 1lost1 :)
I don't know anyone who has...
But to be honest with you I feel
the all day school is a good thing.
Your little Livy will do fine.
I think it will be no different than
when they start 1st grade, ya know.
Kids of all ages have to adjust when
summer is over and school shall begin, lol
I wish they never stopped the all day kindergarten :(
I truly believe it has really hurt our kids today....
How do ya cram all that into a few hours, and not
make the child feel overwhelmed...
Than it takes ya right to all the requirements
these poor little things have to meet before
kindergarten, omg I was so shocked!!
I may sound old fashioned but I truly believe
these little ones should be learning the basis
like we did when we were attending kindergarten
(well I might be showing my age now, huh, lol)
I think it was much more beneficial to them learning
simple things as we call them, but not simple to
the child... The excitement of coming home and
sharing with mom and everyone I can count to
100 and tie my shoes another time, and this goes
on and on ya know what I mean. Plus the adjustment
has already been made for a whole day at school,
so when they enter the 1st grade and now we are
on to much bigger things and important ones, like
the math and reading an entire book alone,
being away from home the entire day.
This is when it is so important
for the child to be comfortable and no fears or any
distractions. These are the start of the real learning
abilities, so when they have to adjust to all new things
I believe this is the problems are little ones get thrown
at them in the 1st grade. I have home schooled my
children and I did all day from the beginning so I am
just trying to give ya an idea of how I saw my little ones
adjust and grow confidently, the way they should be
able to. One more thing also, with this half day
kindergarten, when the little ones are screened
and some don't meet the requirements, because
they were not as fortunate to have parents that
were able to make sure their little ones were gonna meet these requirements or some just are being brought up
in a household that lacks stability, is this the poor little
ones fault, omg no, but I have seen it and the child
suffers from it not the adult. Alright then I think I have said enough huh? I could go on and on with this, lol
I just am one that does what ever it takes to stand up
for these kids, and make sure that learning is a great fun
experience for them! this is so crucial for these little
bystanders. They need someone to do that, they can't do
it for them-self, sometimes I need someone to stand up
for me and when there were times when no one would or could oh my how awful it felt, I can't even imagine then
how awful this would be for a child. Alright then I did say
I was gonna shut up a few sentences ago didn't I? lol
Hope this is something helpful to think about anyways.
Enjoy these young precious years, you know from
your older ones how quickly their years go by.
Thanks for listening to me, I now its long but I am
working on that with my posts.
(I act as if I am sitting at a table having a convo), lol

Re: All day Kindergarden
I feel like I am in full blown conversation here as well. It's hard to sum up everything in a few sort sentences :)
The gal I work with her youngest just went to kdg. this year. I was stunned with what was expected of them to know prior to enrollment. And the stuff they have learned this year was stuff I remember my boys learning in more advanced grades.
That's wonderful that you homeschool. I don't think I would have had the patience for it. If she goes all day, I think it will be fine & if it's partial it will be what I remember with the boys, so we should be able to get through it either way.
I don't know what happens to the little ones who come from a home where the parents don't take an interest in parenting. It would have to make for an awful experience at school and a sad childhood.
I try to stay in the moment with Olivia because it does go so quick.
Have a great Sunday Peggy.

Re: All day Kindergarden
My son will be going to all-day kindergarten and I think it will be wonderful for him. He loves going to preschool now and in his 4 year old class, which goes 5 mornings a week, they started the second half of the year focusing on skills to get them ready for kindergarten. I will also say, he is one of the oldest in his class- but for boys, I understand that generally is better. We go to a wonderful preschool and besides the socialization aspect, he has learned alot from his teachers whose children already go to the elementary school. They knew what would be expected and have tried to emphasize that for them. They still get plenty of play time, but have learned so much too. The schools are considering K more like pre-1st grade due to the requirements being placed on the educational system, which is why they emphasize and teach so much. The kids really soak it up though, so I hope my son will do pretty well since we have already worked on alot of it. When you do the math, after they eat, they only have about another 2 hours (maybe) in the afternoon, so for us all-day kindergarten shouldn't be too bad.
