I thought the same thing ~ thought it was our sign all is well.

I think things are working out across the street too. Traffic is non existent now. It instantly came to a halt. And last night one of the Dad's was out with the boys, they had a bike flipped upside down and were working on it a bit ~ together. The baby was out, dressed appropriately (we have a bit of a cold snap right now) and they were all being nice to her and keeping her off the bottom steps. She has the most gorgeous curls I have ever seen ~ they almost look fake and over the weekend and last night were the first times I have seen her hair shampooed and combed. Oh my gosh she is just one of the prettiest little gals I have laid eyes on.

emoticon hoping they just treat the kids as they should and allow them to be safe and have some fun. I have no idea how they are going to manage through winter ~ there can't be enough room to for people to breathe in the place, but just happy for what there is now and trying not to worry about that.

Red ~ Zak was downstairs last night and he has a wet cast, this is our first experience with that type of wrap on the outside... It is chipping away ~ pieces of it breaking off. They used 3 rolls of that material so that he could shower every 24 hours. We have actually wrap a garbage bag around it prior to the shower just to protect it additionally. The top layer is breaking off in pieces and he has the heel of the cast splitting.

All casts prior have held up, gotten rattier looking near the time they were to come off but they didn't break apart and they didn't crack a day after being put on.

Is this something I should call about, do you feel or is this normal?

Edited to add ~ I did call, they said they need to reinforce that area and they will do so tomorrow we can just do a walk-in after school hours.

Is there anything additional I could ask for to protect that heel, even if it means out of pocket expense. Additionally with the baby in the house I am not real pleased with bits and pieces of that cast falling off as he moves through the house. I am guessing that is a fiberglass/ polyurethane of some type and if she would ingest that I would think that would not be good. I told Zak I think we need to get an old soft sweatshirt and encapsulate that just so pieces don't get down to where she can get them. It's difficult to watch for every little piece.

Thanks for the help and being there to answer questions ~ I do appreciate it emoticon

I actually do not know why they put on a wet cast- especially with the little one around and all. I never have heard of a cast being put on so recently flaking off and falling apart. Why didn't they just get him in a regular fiberglass cast or a walking boot type cast? Usually, when fiberglass strips/wrap are applied, it dries hard and doesn't chip as you said. Did they split the cast or is it splitting on its own? I have a call into my hubbie to see if he has an advice (ortho doc). I checked the AAOS website (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) and saw nothing about a material like this. In fact, they warn about NOT getting the cast wet at all since fungus and skin breakdown can occur within due to trapped moisture. Let me see what he says, but I would tell them to redo the whole thing since it seems really sub-par. I'll get back to ya..... emoticon

Ok, I see that what we are talking about is this non-absorbant cast padding etc that allows the water to not be absorbed etc. and allows people to shower etc. Still waiting for my hubbie, but I checked it out further. I am a little concerned since it says that the water has to drain out via gravity in order to dry the cast and being an ankle cast, that seems a little awkward and slightly impossible. I am worrying more of his skin integrity under there. I haven't found any info on it yet, and will wait to hear from "the doc". emoticon

Re: Off to a Great Start

we wrap it in a garbage bag for shower (a 13 gallon one) the doc did say it is imperative that we drain the cast after the shower and it is not to see what again for 24 hours. We stuff one bag in the toes, one bag in the top by his knee and then use one bag covering the whole thing and cinching it shut. I am scared half to death mold and mildew are going to set in and also concerned with odor.

I asked Mom why they didn't give him a heel piece ~ I have seen a few with a blue sole in that area. She explained to me it was because he is not to put any pressure on that ankle because of ligament damage. If he doesn't keep all pressure off of it during this cast time he will need an operation to correct damage.

Once the doctor came in and looked and we all talked there was a gal who came in and applied the actual cast. Everyone said it was ok for me to go ahead and head back to the office because the consult was over and the cast was just being put on. So I did.

I am just having second thoughts about this wet cast, additionally I don't like how within 24 hours its falling apart. But... I don't like to think of asking them to remove it and reapply one, because all joking aside about how he loves and illness this has been pretty painful. But I wonder how a cast that falls apart like that within 24 hours is actually going to assist in the healing process.

And thanks Red. I really do appreciate it and I hope hubby is ok about answering the questions. Any information is helpful. I would like to know in light of how this one is working what is the best thing I should do for Zak allow them to repair or ask for a replacement with a plain ole plain ole one.

Re: Off to a Great Start

Well ~ the saga continues... my nerves are just about shot. Last night Zak had a horrible night. But we elevated & he took Benedryl for the itching. He eventually went to bed about 10:00 or so.

This morning he seemed to be taking an extra long time in the shower. Of course I hollered for him to get his backside moving. His ride came and went ~ I then became his ride. Well I let him know I didn't want to be late today...

Eventually he makes it down the stairs ~ minus the cast. Words cannot express what went through my head at that moment.

Then I hear the doctor said an air cast was fine, if I wore it. He literally sawed off the cast we have monkied around with all week trying to get just so ~ to help his ankle.

Needless to say it got pretty heated I am so angry and upset this morning I just can't even think straight. I went ballistic this morning and he thinks everything is just coming up roses because the air cast was an option before all of this started. My Mom is fit to be tied.

I can't see paying to have another cast put on only for him to cut it off and I have no idea if the air cast is on properly and helping. Some 17 year olds just aren't at an age where you can mention all options apparently mine was one of them. I am in a heck of a predicament now ~ but feel pretty helpless. Have no idea how this is going to turn out but I would imagine the end result is going to be an ankle that doesn't heal properly. I'll keep you posted. emoticon

Oh Lordy Lost! God bless your patience he'd a bin under the porch in a large bag by now if he was mine!

Well - what can you do? As my friend says 'we can't walk their walk through life for them' so I would say now what you could do is take 10 deep breaths (don't hyperventilate!) and turn to Zak and say, Zak darling, you have a very damaged and weak ankle. I paid for that cast and now that you have removed it I will drive you to the doctors office to have another put on. It is up to you to explain to the doc what happened and to discuss any problems you have with the case. You may choose whatever type of cast you want, however the payment of the cost of this appointment and any subsequent casts is your responsibility. I'll drive, you pay.......in fact if it was me I'd probably charge him a taxi fare emoticon

I've done something like this with one of our kids who was v.careless with possessions - ok they are younger (10yrs) but I tell ya it worked.

At the end of the day you can't sit on him to force him to wear it (even tho' you may feel like it!)

Poor you - don't teenagers suck! As someone I know said 'they are neither use nor ornament' LOL

Hope your day and w/end approves emoticon

It has been one hell of a morning that's for sure. I have a call into the doc. they haven't called back yet. Realistically though they are going say pound salt. I am sure they will put another cast on and I don't don't object paying out of pocket because the money will be debited from his account and routed right to mine. But to go through all of that only to have him saw another one off seems silly to me.

I'll tell you what I did come unglued this morning I think my blood pressure is just starting to lower into the fatal range now.

The school nurse called. She also works at our local hospital. Apparently this is a pretty common guy thing at any age (who knew). She said she has seen this happen numerous times. Little consolation when it happens in your own home, but at least I know he isn't the only nutbag out there.

I could have honestly pinched his head right off this morning. I am still so dang angry that I don't see serenity returning for quite some time.

And yes just as we bill customers here by the mile for travel and mileage ~ I am going to hit Zak right where it hurts and I am even having him pay the additional monies put out for the wet cast and for mine and Mom's time and mileage as it went to getting him taken care of the past week. I might even asses a Florence Nightingale fee for care. I know it sounds awful but some lessons in life do come at a greater cost and this one is going to leave an impression.

My god you are talking some sense there lady! I GUARANTEE you - hit a teen in his/her spending cash and they will sit up and listen. So he saws off the next one - he just pays for a 3rd and so be it. You go SUPERMOM emoticon

I do hope he sees sense and sticks with the cast - sounds like he really does need it.

The doctor's office did finally call back towards the end of the day our doctor did not return to the office. I explained Zak was wearing the air cast ~ the nurse is obviously unable to dispense medical advice so we are to meet with the doctor on Monday at 10 again.

She also confirmed this is very common with teen boys and men ~ it happens more frequently than a person would think.

I took Zak this evening to my Mom's ~ quite honestly I see that leg without the cast and I get too angry when I think about what he has done and I need a cool off period. I also know my Mother is absolutely livid about what he has done so after much thought ~ it seemed like the perfect solution. Here he will just hide on the 3rd floor and if I complain he will just let it go in one ear and out the other. Mom has a single level home, he has no bedroom there, thus nowhere to hide and I came by my emoticon evil mother emoticon skills genetically compliments of the gal I have him rooming with ~ it actually relieves my blood pressure just a tad.

Every time she sees his casper white leg it is going to tick her off and he is going to hear it and its going to rattle his little noggin. He can't escape it he has no place to hide and couldn't even outrun her if he did as his leg hurts like heck.
