More news....not looking good for parents..

Tests ‘show enough sedatives for overdose’

By Sam Marsden
TOXICOLOGICAL tests on bodily fluids found in the boot of the McCanns’ hire car show that Madeleine had consumed a “significant” dose of sleeping tablets, the French newspaper France Soir reported yesterday.

The tests revealed the young girl had ingested enough pills to overdose, the paper said, quoting unnamed sources in Portugal.

Portuguese police could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, social workers visited Madeleine’s parents at their home yesterday to discuss the welfare of the couple’s other two children.

Kate and Gerry McCann invited the officials for talks about two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie in the light of their being named as suspects in the disappearance of their eldest daughter 133 days ago.

It is standard practice for a mother or father named as a suspect overseas to have their case considered by British authorities.

In these cases social services can, in theory, decide to take children into care or place them on the “in need” or “at risk” registers.

Speaking from Rothley, Mr McCann’s brother John said: “They will co-operate with anyone who has the family’s best interests at heart.”

It was reported yesterday that Kate McCann’s private diary documents her struggles to look after her “hysterical” children and reveals details about the night Madeleine went missing. The diary is among a number of personal items prosecutors want from the young girl’s parents, sources close to the investigation said.

Unconfirmed reports in Portuguese newspapers suggested that her journal portrays Ms McCann as being worn out by Madeleine’s “excess of activity”.

She also complains that her husband does not help with family chores, so the burden of looking after their twins falls on her, according to the Correio da Manha.

Other unconfirmed reports said Portuguese police wanted to re-interview both Ms McCann and some of the friends on holiday with the couple when Madeleine went missing. A family spokeswoman said: “We don’t comment on speculation — we’ve been consistent on that. We want to hear things through official channels.”

I have wondered for the longest time why no one seemed concerned for the safety of the twins.

Yes. The portugese police allowed themselves to just go down one line originally which was assuming it was an abduction. Maybe because it's not usual there but they should always have considered the parents. I would think now this evidence won't even be permissable in court as the rental car wasn't compounded at the time - why? I don't know. Why all their belongings weren't seized as part of the investigation I don't know....stable door after the horse has bolted.....poor little angel, where is she... emoticon

They are going to have all kinds of outs because of how the investigation was handled. I am in hopes that the twins are safe ~ alot of folks seem to be jumping on the bandwagon that those parents are under too much scrutiny to anything else... to me that is so not the point. The twins safety comes above and beyond any legalities of this and can't be considered safe because everyone thinks the parents are too scared to try it again. These "parents" aren't in their right mind and believe me I am not even considering temporary insanity ~ long term insanity as a defense ~ there is no defense. I say those two lost every right they had when they put their need for a child free evening ahead of the safety of their children.

I wanted the twins removed just on the fact that these two adults left the children unattended. As the story continues to unfold I think it is paramount the twins are removed this second.

I'm inclined to agree with you. Leaving 3 and 2yr olds...it's bazaar!

I really do not think that Kate and Gerry did it. There is too much speculation now, a lot of it is hear say. I feel instead of trying to get the world to turn against Kate and Jerry they should put all their efforts in trying to find that poor little girl, because if she is alive she must be missing her Mum and Dad so badly.

I don't see really how they could have done it logistically however there are 4 unaccounted for hours...BUT..... they should be the first suspects as it is in every other case....they were negligent with their children and that in itself should be addressed. As I've always said if a working class family left 3 children under the age of 4 alone while they went out they would be in jail at worst and their kids would be in care at best! Because these 2 are highly paid professionals they have avoided all that and that is not right. They need to be questioned and grilled as much in fact more than strangers - the first people suspected in any case of abduction/murder/rape are those known to the victim.

I feel at this point on the fact that they have admitted to leaving those babies alone to go out for the evening someone needs to be making sure they are safe. In any other home those children would have been removed, I think that's appropriate here as well. Continue to look for little Maddy but grill those parents too. First and foremost at this time protect the babies in their care.
