Re: my favorite books
I can't read JKR. Her point of view is uncontrolled and her passive voice just runs wild. She depends completely on the verb 'to be'.
I admire her creativity and I enjoy the movies very much. But, the books cross my eyes.

Re: my favorite books
I have gotten into non-fiction. Actually reading a very cool book called Weird Maryland, that a friend bought for me. It is much easier for me to ignore the passive voice in a different genre.

Re: my favorite books
I read avidly while pregnant with my child and for whatever reason, was really into historical non-fiction. Three excellent books I read were: "In Harm's Way" about the voyage and sinking of the USS Indianapolos in WWII (it delivered the bomb secretly); "John Adams" excellent, but not an easy read- will challenge you; and "Ghost Soldiers" about the first rangers that helped liberate the survivors of the bataan Death March (they made it into a movie recently, but the book is way better). Enjoy!
PS- I love Harry Potter too!!

Re: my favorite books
I am attempting my first Sue Grafton. She has an odd style, but manages to make me laugh. POV is very strong, but passive voice and characterization seem a bit weak. We shall see.

Re: my favorite books
I used to love them both before I joined a writers' group and learned about passive voice. I sincerely wish I could turn it off, but I just see all the repeat uses of the various forms of the verb 'to be'.
