Lost & anyone interested in Aspergers!

OMG - I'm so so so excited!! The disability unit at the university contacted my sis ( a permanent student - now on her pHd!) to send her this link. It's a really good down to earth guide re. survival for the young adult (i would think would be ok from age 16yrs on approx).

This really is amazing and fab! I'm so happy to have found it - it's a really important piece of work!

I thought it might be good for Justin too

I can't wait to get into that and I have just emailed to Jimmy too. Thanks so much.

Was going to wait until the second meeting to post, but figured this thread from you was "my sign" to share now...

Justin met with his new friend last night. His name is Shawn and wow he walked in their door after being sprinkled with the "Perfect Wand"... He is just so cool~ a great man (30-40 years old). And it was nice, comforting and I think Justin will eventually do just fine with him. He was a bit frustrated last night as he was asked questions by a stranger and that never goes well.

Filled out the paperwork for Justin to be busses to a Super Center. Two days a week he will be picked up at his house bussed down by where we work (30 miles) and he will go to a center that encourages socialization skills. I guess it is supposedly the Bee's Knees. He will be there for approx. 3-4 hours, guided and they have all sorts of activities to give everyone new exposures to different things. The bus will then bring him home. This comes in addition to the hours spent with Shawn.

Shawn is thinking he will come on Wednesdays so that Justin will do the Center, meet with Shawn and then another trip to the Center.

So far everything has been great, but it's very early to really say but we are both so hopeful.

Thanks again for the link & I will keep you posted as we get into this. Hope all is well with you & your brood emoticon

Wow - that is so amazing! Do tell Jimmy to be prepared for Justin to balk at the first few sessions, it takes time to settle and it's important to keep at it - gosh it sounds ideal. Sometimes it's great to have a male on hand too as for lads with AS they like a male role model and its someone they can relate to.

My goodness you are SO fortunate to have these services! Once our lad reaches 18 there is nothing, literally nothing re. services. Hopefully by then something will be in place ...it's only 4yrs away tho....by then they are considerred adults and its 'fend for yourself'...

Anyway - good news from our end also. Our boy is well settled into the university course, is enjoying it and is starting to communicate more with his tutor (she is separate to the course and someone who works with him each July) also and they are having fun together....long may the peace last!!!

Another interesting book by an adult with AS - it's due to be out in Europe in shops v.shortly but is hardback and a bit expensive so we might wait for the softback or even see if the library can source it for us. Its out in the US and is a good price on amazon. Here's the link to it in amazon...

Looks to be a fascinating story - the whole family are pretty fascinating! Here's one of the reviews:

As the mother of a son with Asperger's who's now 17, I truly appreciated this book. It's by turns sad, poignant, and laugh-out-loud funny. And of the many books I've read by and about Asperger's, it's the first that showed the offbeat sense of humor I've always observed and treasured in my son. It offers more than a dollop of hope for all us parents who at various times have worried that our kids won't make it out there in the real world. This book shows that it can be done in spades. Thanks, John, for your strength, courage, and willingness to share your inspiring story. And all the rest of you: Read this book. You don't have to have a connection to Asperger's to enjoy this glimpse into an utterly unique mind.

wow ~ that sounds v. amazing. and Justin does have an offbeat sense of humor that only my one son and myself pick up on so I really liked seeing that. I have to get myself together and get purchasing. Thanks so much for the info :)

Haha. Tell me about it.

The book looks very cool. :) It will be something to read while I wait for people to post.
