Calvin the Conure & Bailey the Beagle

It was a live animal weekend of sorts...

My friend Jimmy got a Conure for him and Olivia. His name is Calvin he is 8 weeks old just a tiny buggar we are still hand feeding him. He is such a cutie and also a loving little guy. I feel like a Dr. Quinn Medicine woman as I have to do the feeding and the weighing, Jimmy is too nervous to do so. But Calvin rolls right along with it. And so far so good.

And my Mom got a Beagle puppy named Bailey she is just gorgeous. She babysat my Brother's Lucy and when she had to give her back she has missed her so much she cried (for days, my Mom is a complete and total animal nut). So my Grandma found her a real nice female who in all honesty is prettier than Lucy ~ but we love Luce too. Both are rabbit dogs. My brother, father and oldest son are all hunters. I am not too fond of that aspect of it, but they are both great pups and I guess that's their natural instinct so they both should be quite happy.

Wow Lost - I had to google conure as i'd never heard of it!! A parrot! wow - very exciting. I've never had a pet bird - is there a lot of care required? The beagle sounds wonderful they are pronounced 'Baygal' here LOL! beautiful dogs. We look forward to some pics.

how are syd & lola doing? have they taken over the house yet?

Edited to add: this is a nice site Conures mind you the 'french kissing' bit grossed me out a bit I'm afraid i don't kiss any pets on the mouth...or anywhere actually emoticon , rubs and cuddles are the extent of physical contact with them for me!!

Re: Calvin the Conure & Bailey the Beagle

Calvin is so cool. Jimmy has actually wanted a parrot since we have been in our teens. He has up to this point always rented his homes and because they are noisy he felt it best to wait until he was able to purchase a house. Calvin has been hand fed so he is just a snuggler. They are a lot of work to train, you have to be dedicated in that respect but their care is pretty low maintenance and mostly just common sense once they get out of the infant stage. Right now we are feeding formula and weighing twice a day, but we could have easily waited to pick him up until he was weened. I guess conures are very messy ~ but we turned a room at Jimmy & Justin's into the bird room so we should be good to go there. Will be a bit better when we pull the carpet and lay tile. Justin thought he liked birds, but wasn't sure. He seems to really like Calvin, still from a distance but he has asked several questions and is always curious if he is getting enough to eat and weighs what he should. We are discovering his inner animal lover :) He didn't have a lot of exposure to animals growing up. He wasn't crazy about the cats to begin with but we notice when we can't find Cole, he is back with Justen and Justen now keeps the door to his room open so the cats can come and go in there as they like :) :) :)

I love how they say Baygal ~ cool. I didn't know when we were heading to Grandma's that Mom had gotten a puppy so I didn't take the camera. We will stop in this week though because Olivia fell in love with the pup and the pup loves Olivia. We guess she came from a home with kids, because when she say Olivia she lit right up and started showing off.

I love animals, but I don't kiss them either. I don't like them eating off of the people utensils, plates etc. A person would be hard pressed to find someone who enjoyed animals more than I do but I like them to keep their lips and tongues to themselves and use their personal food bowls. Working with the kitties now to teach them to stay off of the end tables and the like (possibly on the brink of a losing battle, but trying none the less).

And Syd and Lola are the king and queen of the castle. They are so happy and fun. Just have learned in the past couple of days to come running when we call them when they come home in the evening. I think they are finally learning their names (might just be wishful thinking) but they know when they hear us come in at night if they come running Olivia is ready to play with them. She has done real well with them too. She wasn't real crazy about their razor claws at first, but they aren't using them like they did and they seem to keep them retracted when they play now.

Oh that all sounds wonderful - wow you have to weigh him twice a day! that is time consuming but as you say only for a wee while. What age do you wean them? Amazing and great that Jimmy has a bird room. Will he be given freedom within that room then? I can see why you're planning on tiling it! LOL!

How lovely that Justin is getting involved. Our guy loves the animals and cares for them well. He is happy to feed the pigs now and will always rub whoever is nearby. Animals are so good for all kids. Yes - I agree re. the kissing etc - can't deal with it. Our dog used to occassionally get a plate of all the leftover and then the dishwasher would be whacked way up in temp. but it doesnt' happen anymore as the pigs get all that in their 'slop tray' and doggie just gets her dog food in her bowl. Our indoor cat occassionally hops up on counters but it's rare now as we would always jump up and remove her. I wouldn't leave out any tasty meat morsels tho' as there'd be no stopping her!

It's great Olivia is getting exposure to all the critters also - I think it makes children much more caring. Also cats are v.smart so if a little person is getting a bit too friendly they will just extend the claws a wee bit just as a warning - they don't like to be too crowded. Our lucy (indoor cat) will often nip at the kids if she has had enough but never bite or break skin just a wee warning to back off. She likes to be petted on her terms LOL!

Enjoy them all!

That is so interesting about all the pets! We used to have a Beagle (we say Bee-goul) back in the early 70s and her name was Bess. It was my Dad's dog and was a hunting dog too but then he gave her to me and my first hubby when my daughter was born. That dog was so good with my daughter. I have the cutest home movies of my daughter at 1 1/2 playing with a bunch of beagle puppies!

That little Bailey lit right up when she saw Olivia. They are great dogs for kids. The name Bess is perfect for one.

Suzi ~ I think our Lola is going to be a her terms only kind of gal too. She came into the house spunky with a fun bit of attitude and its sticking with her ~ makes it fun.
