Detroit Rock City?! Nope, it’s San Antonio Rock City.
The morning leading up to the concert is pretty boring so I will skip ahead to the moments just before Godsmack came onstage. Unfortunately the concert didn’t sell out because Metallica lost quite a bit of support and respect here in San Antonio for skipping us on the two Summer Sanitarium tours. After the second tour fans really got upset because we have supported them over the years and yet they skipped us anyway and went to Dallas. Tonight was a great night for Metallica to win back the hearts of all the San Antonians again. But that part would have to wait for another hour.
When the opening music came on for Godsmack everybody was pretty damn excited, San Antonio loves Godsmack, we have always supported them since before they hit the big time and they used to play at the White Rabbit.
Godsmack did what an opening act is supposed to do, get the crowd pumped up for the headlining band and they did plenty of it. Sully did a great job of getting everybody off their feet and he even did a great job playing drums. Him and the other band drummer would throw their sticks in the air but the drummer dropped his once, after hearing it from the crowd he made up for it by doing a great job and he continued to toss up his drum sticks without any more mistakes. Sully, however, seemed to play like an expert. He threw his sticks high up into the air and I was sure he’d drop one but he never did, although he came close. He had to stand up and reach over to grab it but overall they did a fantastic job. Approximately 50 minutes into the set they said they were playing their last song and that we needed to get pumped up for Metallica. He tried once again to get the people in the seats to ‘put down the remotes and get off their asses.’ His remarks seemed to get everybody motivated when he was saying that if the united states had to make a different city the capital then he’d say ‘it should go to ****ing San Antonio. Metallica is going to love you. Get ready for Metallica.’ At that moment I couldn’t wait for Metallica to come out, I was definitely ready to sing out my lungs. Pretty soon I would be watching my favorite band live for the very first time, it was such a great feeling watching the stage get set up and the men climbing the ladders to hold the spotlights. Every passing second made me more and more anxious.
I have to admit though for a while that AC/DC stole the show. Everybody was quiet and still when all of a sudden the song ‘It’s a long way to the top (if you want to rock and roll)’ came on the radio and everybody stood up and started singing it. Two women got on somebody’s shoulders and showed their breasts to everybody. They continued throughout the song but that was the only time I saw anybody do that during the entire concert. So thanks to AC/DC the whole crowd saw some titties. I’m not one to be disrespectful to ladies but I have to admit that the very first lady to show her breasts (and she was also the one who showed them the most) had some pretty big ones. I mean, I was on the skinny side of the general admission part and she was on the larger side to my left but I could see those things very clearly. A short time after the Ac/DC song finished came the Metallica entrance song.

Re: Detroit Rock City?! Nope, it’s San Antonio Rock City.
As the lights went out and ‘The Ecstasy of Gold’ was playing I felt so much happiness go through me that I felt my eyes get watery, after all these years I was finally going to see my favorite band, I was finally going to see the man who I admire so much for his strength that I named my son after him. It was such a wonder feeling knowing that in just a few short seconds all the waiting would be over. I would finally get to see for myself what live Metallica was all about. Once they came out and they started playing 'Blackened’ all those thoughts went away and the only thought I had was now is the time you rock hard and spill your emotions right here, right now. During the first couple of songs I met this young lady who was 23 years old, she was very beautiful (damn she was very - very beautiful) and very nice. I met her when because she was standing right beside me and out of nowhere her brother jumps in front of her (he had been drinking a few beers) and caused her to lose her balance. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her falling backwards and I knew she could be hurt or stepped on if she fell so with my natural instinct I turned around and grabbed her arm with one hand and with my other hand I slid it under her back to prevent her from falling. She kept apologizing because she thought maybe she had stepped on me or kicked me but I assured her she didn’t and then she apologized for what her brother did, but after that we began talking throughout the entire concert. The cool thing was that it was also her very first Metallica concert, we shared that in common also. That pretty much made the concert a whole lot better, seeing your favorite band and meeting an incredibly gorgeous lady, well not only meeting her but saving her from a possible injury. But because of my divorce and my son not knowing this lady I didn’t ask her for her number. I’m pretty sure I could have gotten it but I bit my tongue not to ask her. And being the typical sweetheart that I am I just had to compliment her at least once. When she told me how old she was I told her she didn’t look 23, I said she looked 19 and she said that is the best compliment anybody has ever given her. Thinking back on it now, how could I be so dumb not to get her number? It was so great being able to talk to each other with our arms around each others waist. I head banged as much as I could and I help up the horns for most of the time but it came time to show some real emotions a few songs into the set when they began to play ‘Bleeding Me.’ When it started playing the first thing that popped into my head was ‘Thank you god for playing this song tonight.’ Throughout the whole song I kept thinking about how much Amberlee has done for us and how young she was to leave. I felt tears coming down when James started singing the lyrics and when the song was over he announced that it had been dedicated to some friends he had met before the gig (I guess at the meet and greet) and that they requested Metallica play the song because it meant something to them. I don’t know who it was dedicated to or who dedicated it but I thank them very much for it. After I heard what had happened to Amberlee and after I found out what her favorite song was I had always hoped they played it at the San Antonio show, I even hoped they played it over my favorite song ‘Hero of the day’ (which they did not play). That song made me feel so much better knowing my prayer had been answered tonight. Then to my surprise, another song that I had hoped they’d play was ‘The God that failed.’ When that song came on I was so excited, and at that time Metallica hadn’t even played for an hour yet but after hearing that song if they were to stop the show there and leave I would have been satisfied. Just those two songs made the whole concert much more better.
I actually saw some pretty funny things that you ladies have probably seen but since it was my first concert I hadn’t seen it yet. One guy tried to jump the wall onto the general admission floor but when he landed he hurt his leg. I don’t know what the security did with him but I don’t think they threw him out of the SBC Center. Then one lady who worked there left her spot for a couple of minutes and a bunch of people who had seats came onto the floor. That lady had also taken a drink of beer from somebody so maybe she had went to go get more. And I don’t know why he did that but a guy had been body surfing and they were dropping him over the fence and the security caught him and when they were taking him back to the door on the gate the guy started walking towards the stage right where James was and the security pushed him, it looked funny.
Also, out of all the live performances I have seen (maybe you ladies have seen James do it) I have never seen James play without a pick, ever. Towards the end of Damage, Inc. (maybe 1 or 2 minutes, I think it was about 1 minute though) James’s pick had popped up and he tried to catch it by sticking out his arm but he couldn’t see it. The mic that he was on didn’t have any picks and he looked at the mic standing about 10 or 15 feet away but it was too far because he had to sing again so he began playing with his hand. I’m not sure exactly how much pain he was in but every time he touched the strings he would make a face like it was hurting a lot. Even though he was standing right in front of me when he lost the pick I only saw it pop up but I didn’t see where it landed, poor James though. Good thing the song didn’t have much time left.

Re: Detroit Rock City?! Nope, it’s San Antonio Rock City.
I did manage to get the boys’ attention 3 times during the concert. Good thing I positioned myself around a bunch of shorter people. The first time Kirk was standing in front of me playing the guitar. He stood close to the people who were reaching to touch him and the guitar and I had the horns up but as soon as I saw that he looked at me I threw the finger at him and he made a little smile and walked to the other side. A few songs later James was in the area and it was kind of similar only this time he wasn’t that close. He was looking straight at us for a while and everybody had their hands up but after a while everybody put them down and was just head banging. Right before James looked away I threw the finger at him, he turned his head, then glanced back at me and when he saw what I was doing he smirked and walked away. Then the final time I got some good eye communication with Kirk. He was doing the exact same thing as earlier but I noticed he kept looking in my direction so as soon as he looked at me again I threw up both fingers at him and started to yell ‘**** you Kirk, **** you Kirk.” I don’t think he heard me but I think he was reading my lips because he stared at me for a good 3 or 4 seconds before making a face and turning away. But I think he made the face because he was tired, not at me. He had just finished a solo when I got him that time.
I’m not a big fan of the whole pick thing, I don’t really care if I get one or not and even if I did it would probably only collect dust in my room but I had two chances to get a pick today. The first time Kirk had thrown some right in my direction but when I raised my hand to catch one I had missed. People had scrambled on the floor to try and get one but I didn’t bother trying to get it. As it turns out the guy who was standing right behind me was the one who found it. He had been on the floor looking for a while before he found it so maybe if I had put some effort into looking for it I might have gotten it first. He was showing us what it looked like when I happened to turn around and catch a glimpse of Rob with a handful of picks. He moves really fast because all of a sudden he threw some again in my direction and in a quick split second I just threw my hand up but didn’t catch one. As people scrambled again to get them I saw one laying right by the shoe of the guy standing right in front of me. I was just abut to bend down and pick it up when that guy’s hand reached for it and picked him up. I was thinking of knocking him down but I didn’t want to get somebody hurt over something I really don’t have much use for. I left it at that. Lars didn’t throw too many drum sticks but when he did he only threw about 4, all the other ones he gave them to people in their hands. He didn’t throw any in my direction though.
They played a couple of more songs after that and then the show ended. Before they left though Lars guaranteed we wouldn’t have to wait 6 years to see them again, he promised we’d see them soon so I sure hope they keep that promise. This day will be locked into my memory forever, I’m sure. Obviously it is one of the greatest days of my life, but for sure not one of my tope two days of my life - but it sure ranks up there. I’m not much of a t-shirt kind of guy, (I only have 6 metallica shirts) so I didn’t buy one from the tour but I did buy the tour book. I prefer those as souvenirs because I like to read and look at books and magazines. Even though there was plenty of fun for the after party the most important stuff happened inside the SBC Center so I only posted what happened at the concert, I don’t think anybody wants to har about the whole night. I’m pretty sure I’m leaving out some heavy details but I just can’t remember them right now so I guess I will end this review now. Sorry if it was long and boring but I don’t know how to write Metallica reviews. All I can say is that I can’t wait for the next tour.
After the concert was officially over I think the past 6 years have been forgotten. Metallica, you heard our cries, we heard your music, and now after all these years San Antonio welcomes you back. The anger we shared for skipping us on two really big tours has been forgotten and I know for sure the next time you swing around to San Antonio more people will come because you have proved to us you didn’t forget about us and you have also proven how much we’re still in your heatrs. You have just gained back all the trust and respect you had a few years ago. Thank you for coming and thanks for putting on one hell of a show.
