Brokeback Mountain
Just got back from seeing Brokeback Mountain & I wanted to write down some of my thoughts about the movie.
For those of you that haven't seen it yet & don't want to be spoiled - turn back now - because I'm going to discuss a lot of spoilers.
Let me start by saying that I loved this movie. And that surprised me. Because honestly I went into it feeling almost ... judgmental - thinking that ANY movie with as much hype as this one's gotten will ultimately disappoint.
I was not disappointed in the least. I really only have two complaints about this film, so let me get those out of the way.
First - it sometimes moved a little too slow. Fortunately, however, the scenery was so majestically breathtaking, that you hardly felt the slow pace.
Second - Heath Ledger spoke throughout the whole movie as if his jaw had been wired shut. There were a few times when he spoke his lines & I was all "What did he just say?" But like the occasional slow pace, this too is something that you get over.
I've read reviews where people say that you might go into the movie thinking of it as a "gay cowboy" movie - but you'll go out of it thinking of it as a beautifully tragic love story. It is just that. It is a love story.
The love between these two characters is so powerfully understated that it practically leaps from the screen. When they separate after spending the month together on the mountain where their affair begins - & Ennis (Heath Ledger's character), dismissively says goodbye to Jack (Jake Gyllenhal's character) - Jack drives away, clearly hurt & Ennis waits until Jack's truck is out of sight before falling to his knees in an alleyway, crying out in loss.
When they finally reunite after 4 years - their need for each other is so great that neither can wait longer than a brief moment before fiercely kissing each other up against a wall.
The look in Jack's eye as he watches Ennis ride away from camp. The giddy delight on Ennis' face as he packed for their "fishing trips". The ease with which they spoke - & fought - was an ease that only two people who have been in love for years are able to attain. The restrained grief that Ennis suffers through when he learns of Jack's death - especially when he finds his shirt in Jack's closet. Knowing that Jack kept that shirt of Ennis' for 20 years was extremely moving.
There's a much quoted line from the movie - "I wish I knew how to quit you". It's been joked about, it's been parodied. But in truth - it is a very quick moment in the film. But a powerful moment nonetheless. The dichotomy of desperate love & desperate agony in Jack's tone when he delivers that line epitomizes the emotions constantly running through both characters throughout the entire movie.
But by far the most affecting moment of the movie - for me - was the very final moment. When Ennis caresses Jacks' shirt & says "Oh Jack, I swear ..." You just know that that's the closest either one of them ever came to saying "I love you" out loud.
The casting in this film was brilliant & I expect nominations all around for everyone - Heath, Jake, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway. The ladies of the film were perfect in their roles, in particular Michelle Williams. And while Heath was great (wired jaw speak aside), Jake Gyllenhal is the one I really felt for & connected with. Ang Lee shot the film beautifully - the scenic landscapes were breathtaking. And I must also commend the composer of the films music. The simple guitar notes played throughout were hauntingly beautiful & incredibly appropriate.
And I'd also like to add that my brother, Michael, came along to see this movie with me (after MUCH begging/bribery/harassment from yours truly). And while he was a little uncomfortable with the love scenes (which, btw, were also incredibly appropriate. They were tastefully done & it's nothing you haven't seen before if you've watched Six Feet Under, Oz, Queer as Folk, even Nip/Tuck. They were sexy & well-directed), but my brother - being your typical 20 year old dude - was a little uncomfortable during them. That aside - he liked the movie. He found it to be an incredibly sad love story - in fact he said that verbatim.
I really loved this movie. I'd see it again. And it gets my highest recommendation!

Re: Brokeback Mountain
I haven't seen it yet, but I hope I will soon. I like idea of two cowboys who liked each other. And I am open to that idea
