Double Trouble

A lot of time and effort went into this story. I thought about it a long time, started one like it once but got stuck (off course) but the muses have been very kind and supplied me with enough to write this. I made the timeline as accurate as possible using “The book of three” and the internet. Unfortunately I can’t help to twist and bend some facts so bare with me.

‘Mother! Watch out!’ Melinda jumped out of the way as a fireball came hurling her way. ‘Mom?’

‘I’m fine darling!’ Her mother, Penelope, shouted from the other side of the manor’s living room.

‘Would you come over here?’

‘Are you giving me lip?’ Penelope asked quite calmly trying to get her daughter to express some kind of manors while deflecting fireballs from the demon at hand while merely using her mind.

Melinda squealed when another fireball collided with the couch. ‘Damn you we just had it refurnished!’ Melinda shouted. She stood up and threw a lamp towards the demon who growled as it collided with his head but he didn’t pass out. Penelope glanced at her daughter with a disapproving look from her hide out besides the family cupboard.
‘What? You always said how much you despised the lamp but didn’t have heart to throw it out?’ Melinda asked once she joined her.

‘Take my hand darling.’ She replied ignoring Melinda’s comment. As her mother requested Melinda extended her hand to her mother joining forces. Penelope nodded at Melinda while chanting ‘Evil hiding in plain sight, I use this spell with all my might. Stop your changing form and shape, this vanquish now seals your fate.’

For a moment the spell seemed to be working and Melinda let out a small cheer though she cheered too soon.

‘I am too strong for your pathetic magic tricks witch!’

‘Witches and demons have been battling for centuries, can’t they think of anything better to call us then witch?’ Penelope asked out loud. She held up her hand and sent him flying into the wall. A loud crack was heard around them but as they approached the wall the demon was gone as fast as he had come.

‘Dammit!’

‘Melinda!’ Penelope scolded.

‘What ever mom!’ She rolled her eyes. ‘Where are my nieces?’ Melinda moved onto the next topic.

‘At school, you know that place you never wanted to attend? All though I think Phoebe might have the same problem as you.’

‘Hey, I turned out okay.’ Melinda chuckled.

‘Oh yes… the club.’

‘It brings food on the table mother.’ Melinda looked up from the couch she tried to fix.

‘You know it does.’

‘I guess it’s better than that diner your sister worked at.’ Penelope replied looking at the hole in the wall. ‘Some times I wonder what would have become of her had she still been alive.’

‘You and me both mom.’ Melinda sighed. She had been the late comer into the family. Melinda, named after the great-great-great-great grandmother Melinda Warren, the one to start the Halliwell Family tree in the late 1600’s, had been 10 years old (born in 1961) when her sister delivered her eldest daughter, Prudence Halliwell (mostly called Prue), in 1971. Her second niece, Piper Halliwell, was born in 1973. Her youngest and favourite niece, Phoebe Halliwell, was indeed fourteen years younger than Melinda but they were like two peas in a pot. It was now 1985, and Phoebe was 10 years old and already a spitting image of Melinda, character wise. Always getting into some kind of problems, the Halliwell women had a knack for that. Piper was the quieter one of the three, excellent in school but shy and therefore often pushed to the background. Prue however was quite the little princess even now at 14 years old. Anything she set her mind on she did or got away with. When Melinda’s sister Patty died in 1978, by a water demon who drowned her, the whole family had been upset. This was now 7 years ago. The powers of the young ones had been bonded by Melinda’s mother in 1975. Thankfully Melinda and Penelope could handle all the demons coming for them and thus they were able to protect the future power of three. Needless to say Melinda was happy to get away from the responsibilities when ever she could be missed. She loved her club and wouldn’t give it up for the world. She didn’t need her mother to protect her since she had her own powers. She had inherited the powers of her great grandmothers P. Russell and P. Bowen which were to throw fire and turn anything liquid into ice. ‘I have to go to work mother.’ Melinda announced.

‘And leave me with the trash?’

‘Would you rather stand in an overcrowded rock club?’ Melinda asked.

‘Run along now dear, don’t forget, dinner is at 6.’ Penelope smiled sweetly kissing her daughter on her cheek lovingly.

On the other side of town in a small house a group of men lived. They lived there whenever they were back home. This time they were staying here a week before going back on the tour their band had committed too. Taking a long drag from his cigarette one of the men played with his beer bottle in front of him. Pealing the labels from the bottle and sighing. Folding the labels over and over until all there was left was a small little ball which he threw over the balcony. Somehow this whole day was going nowhere. He ran a hand through his long thick hair cursing as his fingers got caught. ‘Can nothing go right today? ****!’ A long deep sigh followed.

‘Lars, what are you doing man?’ His band mate James Hetfield walked into the room.
Lars looked up, huffed and turned back to his beer. ‘Nothing, absolutely ****ing nothing. I am bored out of my brains.’

‘You could try to go into the studio since we are all ****ing waiting on your lazy ass.’
Lars’ eyes snapped up, he had a witty comment ready but it just disappeared from his mind as fast as it had formed. ‘**** you!’

‘Wait… Lemme just… Yeah… Oh yeah that hurt like a *****.’ James countered placing his hand on his chest where his heart would be. ‘Would you get going already?’

‘No! I’m having an off day! Can I please have a ****ing off day without you constantly nagging?’ As if in protest Lars pulled the robe he was wearing tighter around his body while crossing his arms over his chest and crossing his one leg over the other.

James looked at the deep rimpels forming in Lars’ forehead as he sulked. ‘What happened to you man? I thought you went up with that girl yesterday, didn’t you get laid?’ He took the beer from Lars flashing him a cheeky smile and taking a long swig from it.

‘You are such an ass hole.’ Lars shook his head lighting yet another cigarette.

‘Because it’s true?’

He sighed wishing James would vanish into nothingness instead of being in his presence right now. ‘Yes you are an asshole. Where’s Kirk? Can’t you bugger off and go harass him?’

‘Alas,’ James exclaimed dramatically. ‘Kirk is at some kind of freaky exhibition of skulls or something like that.’ James waved the comment away.

‘Aha! So not everyone is waiting on me in the ****ing studio!’
James sighed, clearly annoyed by his stubbornness which was unfortunately one of Lars’ many character flaws. ‘You sir are one big ass hole.’

‘I know, now **** off.’ Lars countered.

That night Lars finally pulled himself together and went to a club. ‘Just one drink.’ He told himself sternly as he walked down the streets of San Francisco. He passed a long line of people. They were waiting all round the corner but Lars knew the place. He came there a lot and it helped that the bouncer was a big Metallica fan. ‘Hey man,’ Lars shook the bouncer’s hand who nodded and let him inside. ‘Thanks.’ The entrance hall was littered with people dancing, drinking, talking on phones or to each other with raised voices to carry over the music that was played inside. Making a straight line for the bar he sat down on the one empty seat and waited for one of the TR (Total Rock) waitresses to pour him a drink. A woman, about his age stood in front of him looking into a small booklet while holding a phone against her ear. She was wearing a black leather jacket and a red top underneath for as far as he could see. ‘Hello?’ Lars called out to her but she merely glanced at him before looking back into her booklet. ‘I’m Lars Ulrich… I’d like a drink.’

‘I’m Melinda Halliwell, and I’d like you to wait your turn.’ She countered looking up at him. Her dark eyes were flashing as she took his appearance in. ‘I am DONE waiting!’ She suddenly yelled. ‘You promised me to have the liquor delivered today, it is now almost the end of the day and you know what’s missing? That’s right, the liquor. I expect you to have it here within an hour or I’m getting myself another supplier.’ Melinda slammed the receiver down and scowled at the phone as if it just called her a nasty word. A few seconds later she turned around and faced Lars. ‘So what do you want?’

‘A beer.’ Lars replied.

‘Fine, a beer.’ Melinda turned around and grabbed the beer from the cooler underneath the bar. She was in a foul mood. It wasn’t just the supplier even though she now hated him with a passion. That afternoon the demon got away and it got her worried. It wasn’t an ordinary demon either, he was powerful even though Melinda hated to admit it. Since that moment everything went wrong. ‘What else?’ She asked him.

Lars’ eyes widened. For once he didn’t want to continue annoying this woman when usually that was his game. ‘Nothing.’ In a weeks time he and his band members were going back on tour but Lars had a bad feeling about it all. Something just didn’t feel right.

Re: Double Trouble

Melinda walked to the stockroom and once there she closed the door from any nosy clubbers. She sighed and within the blink of an eye she disappeared and reappeared inside her manor. A new nifty little trick she learned, of which her mother knew nothing about.
She stepped up to the book of shadows and leafed through it trying to find her demon.
A swirl of white and blue orbs announced the entrance of her white lighter her guardian angel. ‘Christian, just in time.’

‘For what?’ He asked joining her behind the book of shadows. The book which contained spells and potion receipts from witches through out their family tree.

‘We had a demon in here today… and he wasn’t a very nice boy.’ Melinda spoke playfully. ‘He wrecked our couch!’

‘Okay Melinda, I get what you are on about. So what do you need to know?’

‘For one who the hell he was! We tried a spell and he didn’t even scream… a lot.’ Melinda pouted at Chris while she attempted to put her long black hair into a ponytail.

‘Okay, what did he look like?’

‘Ugly.’ Seeing the expression on Christian’s face Melinda knew he needed more than that. Rolling her eyes and wishing for a female white lighter whom she knew would understand in a heart beat what she meant she started to explain it to him. ‘His skin was bright red, black marks on his face… erm… he was huge. Kinda expected horns but there weren’t.’

‘Is this the one?’

Melinda’s eyes settled on the page Christians finger was pointing at. ‘Demon Belthazor. When in human form he possesses the powers of an upper level demon such as opening time portals. His shadow acts like a Triad spy and messenger.’ She read out loud. ‘Well, I hope that wasn’t his human form cause damn! Will he have a hard time trying to blend in.’

‘This is no laughing matter Melinda,’ Christian replied immediately. ‘According to the elders this demonic soldier of fortune is most evil and vile.’

‘Have you been reading those books again Christian? I believe we talked about that.’ Melinda smirked. ‘Besides, the elders?’ Melinda cast her eyes upwards towards the ceiling and then leaned into Christian. ‘Think anyone is most evil and vile.’

‘Oh… Oh you laugh Melinda! But this demon cannot be defeated by your normal powers! You can only vanquish Belthazor by making a potion.’

‘Christian, we make potions on a daily basis.’ Melinda chuckled.

‘This particular potion requires a piece of his flesh.’ He replied matter of factly.

‘Eeeew.’ Melinda screwed her nose up. ‘That’s disgusting.’

‘And not to mention dangerous! You can’t even get him to pass out! Let alone keep him still long enough to cut a bit of his flesh and get away without being killed.’

‘Don’t worry so much okay?’ Melinda patted his back when suddenly she saw a head disappear from behind the door. ‘Phoebe Halliwell… what are you doing out of bed? Were you eaves dropping?’

Phoebe showed herself and didn’t hide her smile. ‘I was curious.’ She replied. ‘Why is Christian here?’

‘You know he’s here to teach me remember?’ Melinda walked up to her and guided her down the steps of the attic to her bedroom. ‘Now you get your behind in bed little lady. Early day tomorrow.’

‘Okay Aunty Melinda.’ Phoebe nodded kissing her cheek and jumping into her bed. Melinda looked around the room to make sure everything was okay and closed it. She doubled back to the attic and found Christian leafing the book of shadows.

‘So was there anything else?’ Melinda decided a change of subject was in order since that was what Christian and herself usually did when ever they had a discussion.

‘As a matter of fact yes. You get your first innocent.’ He beamed as if this was the greatest privilege to happen to anyone.

‘Really? So now they trust me? Cause just now you said I couldn’t vanquish Belthazor because they said he was the most evil and vile one around.’ Melinda crossed her arms and tapped her foot mocking his tone of voice.

Christian, being the one person Melinda knew lacked a humour bone, scowled at her reaction. ‘He’s one to stay out of the way of if you can. Don’t tempt him into killing you is all I’m saying.’

‘Fine! So the innocent, tell me about him… her?’

‘Him.’ Christian nodded. ‘He will become a white lighter when he dies. Unless the demons who are after him kill him first.’

‘So what makes him so special?’ Melinda started chewing on some pretzels. She always carried them with her. Instead of buying candy and other fat increasing products she tried to loose some weight and ate the non fat pretzels.

‘This man has touched many hearts by doing the best he can, making music.’ Christian explained. ‘And you’ll love this. He’s in a rock band.’

‘No seriously…’ Melinda shook her head.

‘Yeah it’s… Metal something, can’t remember.’ Christian tapped his chin with his index finger in thought.

‘Is Metal in the name or is that the kind of music they make?’

‘I think it’s in the name. Well anyways-’

‘Metallica?’ Melinda guessed knowing the answer.

Re: Double Trouble

‘Yeah! That’s the one!’ Christian nodded. ‘He is supposed to die, September 1986 so you’re not allowed to save him on that date.’

Melinda’s mouth dropped open. ‘Who?’ Christian backed away from her slowly trying to figure out how fast he could get away from her. ‘WHO?’

‘You’re starting to sound like a demented owl Melinda.’

‘I asked you who!’ Melinda’s voice had dropped low and seemed to have been reduced in speed and Christian started stuttering.

‘His name is Cliff, Cliff-’

‘Burton.’ Melinda finished. ‘The bassist… ****, he was… well he is the nicest of the bunch.’

‘You know them?’ Christian asked regaining his courage reminding himself she couldn’t kill him since technically he was already dead.

‘Christian I own a rock club. They played for me once when they were just breaking through. As a matter of fact their drummer Lars? He was in the club tonight.’ She nibbled on a pretzel and sighed. ‘Any idea which demon?’

‘I narrowed it down to 5 candidates.’ He handed her a note. ‘You need to go with them. Join the workers-’

‘Roadies.’

‘Y-yeah, and stay close to them at all times, or Cliff anyway. Their leaving tomorrow and you are too.’

‘What about my mother?’

‘She will be able to handle her own Melinda. She knows about this, she knew this time would come and she is excited about it.’

‘It’s not her I’m worried about, I know she can handle protecting herself but with three powerless children present?’

‘I will be around them at all times.’ Christian promised while crossing his heart. ‘Cheer up Melinda. It’s your first innocent! Aren’t you happy about this?’

‘Happy? Someone is going to die September next year and I’m not allowed to intervene? No Christian I’m not happy about this. But it’s what I do so I deal.’ Melinda nodded at him and then left him alone in the attic to collect potion ingredients she might need.

‘Still up darling?’ Penelope walked into the kitchen to find Melinda rummaging through the cupboards.

‘Where did we leave the mandrake roots?’ Penelope opened the door next to the one Melinda was looking into and handed her the jar.

‘I take it Christian has told you then?’ She pointed at the kettle and within seconds the whistle in it announced the water was boiling. Melinda sat down at the kitchen island and sighed watching her mother prepare two cups of herbal tea and handing her one. All that time Melinda had been silent. ‘Are you not happy?’

‘Mom, how am I supposed to save a guy from demon attacks while knowing he’s going to die anyway? And also? Not being able to tell him he is going to die.’

Penelope took a seat opposite her daughter and sipped the burning hot liquid gently. ‘My point of view?’ Melinda nodded in reply. ‘We are born to die. One is born with a mark, ones death is preset in his or her future.’ Penelope nodded at her own reasoning. ‘To tamper with that plan,’ Penelope laughed bitterly. ‘Well, it’s just not done. You can’t change the facts darling. He will die one way or the other. It would be an endless fight not to mention a full time job to protect him and safe the man time and time again.’

‘I guess your right but it doesn’t make me feel any better. Besides, I met those guys once, how the hell am I supposed to go and work there?’ Melinda asked stirring the spoon in her cup while motioning it three inches above the spoon.

‘That’s something you should figure out; I can’t help you with that. This is your battle, all I can say is be careful and use your head. Don’t get distracted or side tracked by anything that will lead you off your path.’ Penelope stood up and walked to the door of the kitchen. ‘I’m going to sleep… Make sure you get your rest.’

‘I will mom.’ Melinda replied absentmindly. ‘I will.’

That very next morning Melinda woke up to the sound of Prue and Phoebe bickering over something. Groaning, Melinda checked her alarm clock and discovered it wasn’t 7 am yet. Melinda threw the covers up and slumped to the door of her room passing a mirror. Wearing her comfy pink pyjama pants and a spaghetti strap top, also pink, she smoothed her hair back and walked into the hall way.

‘It’s my doll!’ Phoebe bellowed. ‘Mine, mine, miiiine!’

Melinda groaned and walked two doors down. It was wide open and Melinda watched Phoebe and Prue duelling over the doll. ‘Girls?’ No response came. ‘GIRLS!’ Both the girls jumped away, the doll lying motionless in the middle. ‘Why are you fighting?’

‘The doll! It’s mine!’ Phoebe crossed her arms and pouted at Prue.

‘As if I want that stupid doll!’ Prue countered.

‘Prudence Halliwell, if you don’t want the doll than why are you harassing your sister?’ There was no mistaking in the annoyed tone of voice as she spoke to Prue. ‘Go downstairs and eat breakfast!’ Both Prue and Phoebe ran out the door, Melinda caught their words as they went.

‘She always takes your side!’

‘Don’t push me!’ Phoebe yelped.

‘God save me.’ Melinda threw her hands up at the sky and sighed. Since she was already up and there would be no way she would be able to get back to sleep she decided to take a shower. Grabbing a towel she slouched to the bathroom like a zombie. She turned the taps on and undressed herself. As soon as she felt the hot water stream over her body she breathed a sigh of contentment. ‘****!’ Melinda jumped away of the water as it turned from the enjoyable warm water to ice cold. ‘Don’t touch the water tap!’ She screamed at the door. ’Sorry dear!’ Scowling she waited for the water to turn warm again before stepping under it cautiously, half expecting the same thing to happen.

She dried herself off with the towel and then wrapped it around her, a smaller one she used for her head wrapping around her wet hair. She walked to her bedroom and heard nothing but the comfortable silence. Melinda guessed her mother had taken the girls to school. ‘What to wear.’ She wondered if maybe that Lars guy would come back to the club tonight. If so she would be able to ask him if they needed someone in the road crew or better yet, personal assistant. ‘Don’t need to know much for that, I know my liquor which they will like and I will be close by at all times or well most of the time.’ Melinda nodded walking to her stereo and pressing play for the cassette in it. Black Sabbath sounded through the speakers and Melinda smiled satisfied. ‘Back to clothing.’ She told herself.
