Dark world confusion.
The game itself seems to go in great length to tell you to purify every portal you see, and prevent ever opening a portal. Yet several guides seem to say that where all the after game stuff happens. Its also a good way of leveling.
So, without spoiling any of the endings, does the Dark world even actually effect the actual game. Also, I heard if you kill your own characters in battle "the main characters would be smart since they don't run away" it opens the portals faster,
Last post here was in 2007, I have a bad feeling about this.

Re: Dark world confusion.
It's been since January since I played this, but if I recall, going to the Dark World does not affect the story at all. It is a good way of leveling though, since the enemies in there are generally stronger than your party is.
Killing your own characters, basically means you pull out the character you want to level onto the map. Then pull out a bunch of your other strong characters. Next you beat them up with the character you want to level up until they are ko'd & you get exp. Lastly, have the character you're leveling exit the map via the portal you got there by.
Doing the above causes the Dark Portals to open pretty quickly. The more you kill your own people on a map, the stronger the stuff in the dark portal for that map becomes.
