As far as I know, you just beat the Cave of Trials, which opens near the end of the game. You can fight him at Dark Shrine 2.

Oh yeah! Just remembered... I loaned La Pucelle to a friend for Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete so I can't remember things well in that game.
