Clive Barker's Jericho

Jericho for the 360, PS3, and PC is looking like the perfect game for the Halloween season. Having the horror writer Clive Barker working on this game makes this possible something that may keep you up at night.

But before the game comes out, let's see how the game looks so far on the demo.

You play as Commander Ross, leader of the Jericho Squad. Your mission is to seek out a creature called the "First Born", the failed first attempt at creating man. It seems that the First Born's awakening will end the world, and your team must stop it.

However, things turn for the worst right away. Ross dies in the begining of the game. Now he is a ghost that can possess the remaining six members. This ability to swap between members gives the game some strategy as each member has different weapons and powers.

The demo only gives you access to three of the six, trying to find out what happened to the missing members. First off is Church, the ninja of your squad. She is great for sneaking up on an enemy and taking them down before they even notice. She also has the ability to draw her own blood and freeze enemies in place, or set them on fire (so long as they are in the area the spell is set). However, she's not good with large groups of enemies.

Second is Black. She's your sniper. She also has the ability to move things with her mind. Even to the point to guide her rifle round. Of course, she can't be in close quarters combat.

And finaly, there's Delgado. He can control fire, and has that gattling gun. But he can't handle fast moving enemies. So as you can see, it is a very good idea to possess the right member for the right job.

There's no ammo packs or health kits in the ruins. But if a member of your squad falls in battle, you can revive them, and ammo can be warped in by "Reality Hacking". However, in the demo the aspect of running out of ammo is a moot point.

The enemies in the game are scary, but only a particular moments. It's more like Doom than F.E.A.R. in scare moments, but the game plays well nontheless.

A full review will be submitted after the game comes out on the 23th.

It's time. Let's see how good this game is....

~STORY~

You play as Devin Ross, commander of the seven man "Jericho" squad. Sent in by The Department of Occult Warfare to stop the plans of rouge agent Arnold Leach. However, as soon as you get to the lost city of Al Khali, things go south.

The research team that was there has been slaughtered, and Leach's men (including Leach himself) have been turned into monsters. What started as a simple mission now has become a real threat to the world. It seems that Leach has sacrificed hundreds of souls that he has been saving to open a breach into the Pyxis, the prison that holds the Firstborn.

The Firstborn was the first atempt to create man. However, fearing it's power, God sealed the Firstborn into the abyss, and started over. The Firstborn wants to free itself, and destroy humanity. Every time it has tried, a band of seven warrior/magicians always has been sent to stop him, and although they stop the Firstborn, none have returned.

After facing Leach, Ross is killed in action, and now has the power to possess the remaining members. And every time they go deeper into the Pyxis, they go farther back in time, to the point when the Firstborn first set foot on Earth.

~GAMEPLAY~

Although you don't get the ability to swap souls right away, it becomes a skill you must master. Each team member has a skill that is useful in combat, as well as solving the puzzles that will come up. You can also heal fallen members. However, sometimes you can accidently switch characters as Heal and Possess are on the same button. However, you can also possess any member using the d-pad as well (in the Xbox 360 version, I'm not sure of the PS3 or PC versions).

Allthough you will play with the six remaining members, sometimes a squad member needs to go on their own to open the way for the others, or the squad may be split at some points.

Each team member has a skill you can use. However, it is a good idea to keep an eye on Paul Rawlings. As he is the only other member that can heal team members, keeping him alive is a very good idea. He can also cast a curse on enemies so that all hits on that enemy will regenerate health for the squad.

Xavier Jones can project himself to possess enemies. However, you don't control the enemies, you can only see and use switches. It's a good idea to figure out how to jump from one enemy to another as some puzzles later one require this. As well as the fact that sometimes the enemy will die before you get a chance to do anything.

Simone Cole is your Reality Hacker. She can slow down time, or increase firepower of your weapons for a short period of time. However, although she is the one warping in supplies for the team, for some reason, she can do that even when she not even there. Don't know why, but it's not something to dwel on.

Abigail Black, Frank Delgado, and Billy Church were already talked about in the preview. But as you can see, managing team members for the right task is something you must master.

But, there are time when it seems that they just stand there durring battle. However, this rarely happens. Most of the time, their AI is good. As well as the enemy AI.

~Graphics~

Very well done 3D rendering. It almost looks as good as Gear of War.

But, despite how horrid the enemies look, there are few moments where you feel truely scared of them. But, this is mostly due to the fact that there are few moments where they jump out at you. They just swarm at you. If you have played a lot of FPS games, this game will not be to scary.

So over all, it's a great game. But, it's not up there with Gear of War or Halo 3. But still, check it out. You will not be dissapointed.

OVERALL SCORE: A-
