Digital Devil Saga

It's a little long but atleast I made it enterantaining, also i don't belive in the number system, that jsut causes people to skip the article.

I’m here to mention Digital Devil Saga, an RPG where you not only fight demons you are demons and you eat the other demons, dare I call it demon-riffic? Maybe, but it’s about time that a RPG lets me devour my tasty foes, for gods sake there is a lobster demon how can you pass that up? And if you’re a vegetarian I don’t think this game is for you with there being no demon vegetables in the game.

DDS, come sin a fancy large box, that’s meant to hold DDS 1 and the sequel DDS 2 which comes out the end of summer. Included in the box is a soundtrack for the game, I do have to say it’s nice to get an RPG soundtrack for once when buying the game, which actually contains all of the songs form the game. As for the music it’s a lot of slow piano pieces, mixed with soft to hard rock pieces, most of which are really good. And in typical Atlus fashion they found some Band most people have never heard of to do a song for the opening, a band called Ero Anime, who did a song called Danger, which isn’t include on the soundtrack. While I’m still in the packaging realm, DDS is a bit of an oddity with no one making a strategy guide, maybe I’m lazy and I like having guides so I don’t’ have to do any guess work with bosses, or use scan every second fight because I forgot what electric tigers are weak against.

As for the graphics, I’m so happy to see that some companies are tired of making games that have to look like they’re real. Digital Devil Saga, uses cel shading to achieve the effect that its more like drawn art, no matter what’s gong on the art style is apparent. I absolutely love this aspect, I seriously wish more game companies would take this approach, instead of making the most realistic water ever, or the most advance boob jiggle engine ever conceived.

I’d like to explain what the game’s story is about but I’ve finished it and I still don’t’ really know what’s going on. Basically these people live in tribes in a place called the junkyard. These tribes have been in a never ending battle to destroy each other, until a weird object shows up in the middle of the battlefield. This object curses everyone by giving them the ability to turn into demons. As well a mysterious girl named Sera, appears with the power to help control this curse. Albeit the game does have some pace issues, the dungeons are rather long, and the story sequences are kind of short. But this can easily be over looked since the story is very interesting, it’s one of those mystery type things that the more it reveals the more question you have. Secondly it’s got one the best turn based battle systems I’ve seen in years. Its system is the turn press system, you go in series of rounds, with the enemy and you get turn icons a round. Now were the fun lies if you hit an enemy with something it’s weak against you only use half a turn, mean by playing on weakness you get more attacks. But on the flip side if you use and attack the enemy is strong against you lose two turns. What this makes you do is play smart, you can’t just go into fights and cast whatever you want; you’ve actually got to think the battle through. And the best thing is that you can’t really over level in this game, levels are pretty much meaningless, it’s all based on taking the proper skill. Case and point, regular random encounter can kill you quite easily by exploiting your weaknesses. So basically the game can be quite challenging and quite a bit of fun.

So basically we have a excellent looking cel shaded game, with a impressive soundtrack, solid turn based battle system that empathizes, strategy, and demons who eat other demons, what more is there to ask for? I’m just hoping the sequel due out late this summer will answer most of the question in the story, but this is shaping up to be one of the better RPGs I’ve seen in 05.

One of the best aspects of the cutscenes is that the people didn't look like they were puppets. All too often in 3D games, the characters look like Puppets, and when they interact (touch each other/whatever), it looks unnatural... but it didn't here.

As for the storyline, its very much incomplete in this game. Its kinda like Star Ocean 2/Wild Arms 2, and this is the first disc. In both games, the first disc has its own little storyline that is resolved by the end of the disc, but Disc 2 is where the real meat of the story is. DDS2 is very much like a Disc 2.

Some of the demon forms look stupid though. Cielo and Heat being the worst offenders on the player's side, and most of the Tribe Leaders looked stupid.

I'm not a big fan of this game..

I thought the graphics looked great, but that's about it. All of the characters bored the life out of me and none of them seemed to be any different from the other. I don't mean physically, but it seemed to me all of them had exactly the same bland personality, with only slight viariations (like the pink-haired gal, her name escapes me). The voice acting really bothered me too.. Listening to the convos could nearly put me asleep considering they were so dry and emotionless.

Battle system reminded me of Final Fantasy X-lite with modified turn-system, so not too bad, but not too great either.. What bothered me more was, as Cho mentioned, the characters' Demon forms. Most of them just didn't look... very pleasing to the eye. Even for monsters. I was never thrilled to go into battle playing as lame-looking monsters.

Anyway, maybe I'm too hard on the game, but it just really didn't do it for me... emoticon

The characters all acting the same was kind of a plot point.

Not far, on the mission that takes place after the big meeting of the Tribe leaders, I think.

Didn't hook me enough to rent it one more time, obviously.

I have this game, and all was really good for me...but when the first combat ended and I realized that the characters can't fight into human form...
The game ended there for me...

I prefer Nocturne, because you always have your main char and you can choose beetween a LARGE amount of different monsters to compain you.
