Only once you start unlocking the secret characters, and it's only for one battle, IIRC. I'd recommend playing PB first, if only just to get used to playing without a grid. Things tend to get a lot more complicated once you start playing MK.

Re: Should I play MK or PB first? Play PB first for the full experience in the secret characters in MK. Playing MK I also noticed many improvements over the PB system. I would recommend PB first.

Phantom Brave have the unique turn-base system... Plus Phantom Brave is the only Nippon Ichi game that allows you to Revive fallen characters... Also, the Confine is something to look for... Has so many different attacks, depending on weapons and titles... No New Game+ in Phantom Brave... Lots of extra features though...
Makai Kingdom have the you have one turn, they have one turn... This game allows you to ride mechanical vehicles, make buildings, and the ability to toss a pie at someone... The Invite system is somewhat interesting... Not much variations of attacks, all of them is based on how you equip your weapon... Has New Game+... A whole lot of special features...

Re: Should I play MK or PB first? Just be noted that Phantom Brave had a much more concrete story than Makai Kingdom too. I can't be the only one who thought the final boss in MK was something they thought of on the fly. o_o
