Re: Problems with Disgaea 2
Item world in part 1, throw a bunch of characters to get close enough to the exit. Gain levels by going through a high lv item till you ran into a invincibility geo panel and then work levels. Your goal was to power up your weapon, and get innocents, as they are called.
In part 2, item world has pirates, which I applaud. The secret shops, I don't applaud, especially the fortune ones, because I love to do everything in a game, but that shop was elusive, and made me mad when I couldn't get it to pop after 2 hours. The sub peona thing, annoying because it required waaaaayyyyyyy too many to get anything noticeable out of it. Item town, good idea. The new geo panels were more annoying than fun to me.
I don't care about monsters myself. The only monster I ever used was the 9999 neko once when I test drove it on one of my replay throughs.
Part 2 was an ok game, but it just made everything too complex. It took the simplicity of 1, and over hauled it. They added so much to the game, but they did not make it enjoyable to get access to all that extra stuff. The english voice acting sucked, and I prefer english voice acting in games, so that was a let down.
I don't really think of special moves when judging a game. Special moves don't really impact the game much. I have never seen anybody buy or not buy a game because a character's special move was awesome or not.
To sum up my entire issue, part 2 just did not compare to part 1, which was sad. I picked up part 2 without a second thought, because as I said above, disgaea is at least in my top 3, if not top 1, of favorite games. Part 1 set a bar, and part 2 fell way below that bar. It tries too hard to improve, but in the process overwhelms a player, or underwhelms in certain situations.
But this is all opinion oriented. I am a lover of comedy, and disgaea hit my funny bone, I would laugh non stop in a lot of the chapters. I would sit there with a grin when laharl did his meteor move and had that wicked squeaky laugh going while he rode the meteor. To me, disgaea 1 is the funniest strat rpg, and rpg in general, I have ever played. Part 2 just wasn't very funny, and the characters themselves were just pale imitations of cliched characters, or had annoying speech tendencies.
I still haven't beaten disgaea 2, and I even tried it a few weeks ago. I had half the pirates dead, most of the way through the storyline, already have an excalibur and a god hand, and I just got so incredibly bored. Realizing I had more pirates, and that I had no control over which one will pop up when they do show up frustrated me. Realizing the dark world was a pain to visit annoyed me. All the detrimental geo panels bugged me, because there were just so many, and on a lot of my item world forays, the bad ones were just all over the place, forcing me to leave a level asap or die miserably. Realizing that weapons could go to lv 200, I decided to test drive one.....big mistake. You have to be one of the looniest people in the world to pull that off, and that annoys me. There is hardcore stuff, and then there is HARDCORE. Lv 200 weapons were HARDCORE and had no place in disgaea 2, as it just frustrates the hardcore.
Anyway, I could go on all night, but will stop here.

Re: Problems with Disgaea 2
To Tiredman: First off I like to say, although I agree with some of the things you said, the other things you stated couldn't be more wrong.
1: The shops could've been giving a "slightly" higher chance to show up, but the shops were a nice addition to look foward to, when trying to level the one million, and one items, so don't knock the shops, besides the better items don't even show up in secret shops anyway(the secret shops are basically just there as a bonus, that could potentionally give you some amazing weapons in the early/mid game).
2: Yea, the subpeona was a pretty big pain in the but, but there's a way to ease the pain, move the guy from the Subpeona, to a equip you want to lv up anyway.
3: Yea, monststers that you can get to lv 9,999 in a hour or so aren't gonna be as good as lv 9,999 char that will have to potentionally take months, or atleast weeks to get, big surprise there. Really what's the problem here, and why did you even mention it(although do note, that some monsters get pretty dam strong, not to mention you can equip them with most equips. I suggest you give monsters another shot, some of them, like the Dragons, and the succubi are really really good)? It was a great system, with no flaws, so lets not complain about awesome systems that aren't broken, shall we.
4: Although Disgeae 2 is not an example of the best voice acting, it wasn't bad, and for the most part, the voices fit the game/char. However, if you want to compare, the voice acting in Disgaea 2, was by far better then the first game all around, so again, I don't know why you are complaining to this as well.
5: Complexity, makes a subpar-good game, into a great game, so if you're gonna complain about this, you might as well buy a Square game(as those games as of late, require no brain cells at all), and nearly all the systems in those games this century are so underplayed, It's not funny.
6: Are you joking, part 2 was leaps, and bound better, and the systems that were rather flawed in the first one, were flawlessly implimented in part 2(Dark Assembly anybody, dam that system really sucked in the first game, it was basically impossible to get even a remotely decent chance). Nearly every system from the first game was impoved rightfully so, not overdone like you are claiming. Most people want a game that they can play, that will last more then 20 hours, as well as games they would not mind playing, over and over again.
7: I played Disgaea 2 first, and then picked up the 1st game to see the origins of that great game, and although it was good(omg, I so loved being able to get the secret char in Disgaea 1, that I always wanted to beable to get in Disgaea 2, so that was awesome), I wasn't impressed, "compared" to part 2. Disgaea 1, is truelly like the ancester of Disgaea 2 in every conceivable way. You must be joking, if you think Disgeae 1, was funnier then 2.
Note: Etna, Prinnies, and Laharl's voice acting were by far worse in part 1 (omg, Laharl's cackle, and the Prinnies "Doooood" in part two are so great, I wish they would remake part 1, with the part 2's voices).
8: Disgaea 2 wasn't meant to be destroyed during the first run though, infact you shouldn't really get into any of the side quests(or even item leveling for that matter), until after you beat the story for the fist time(hell, half the side quests aren't available until you beat the game first, anyway).
9: That is what we call extra stuff, It's completely not needed, but by no means effects the game in any way. Yea max leveling a weapon is pretty insane, infact I'm a hardcore RPG, and Tactic game player, yet I didn't even bother with that, but hey, It's there if anyone wants to try. There is even a way to do over 2m damage.
Really though, It's almost like you want to be flamed or something, what's to point of complaining about an extended system, that has no effect on the actual game. If the answer to, can you beat the game, and even all the side quests without even leveliing equips even 25% max level, is yes, there is definitely nothing wrong.
PS. I can go on forever posting how you misjudged almost everything, but I need to leave town for xmas, and besides, by the time I would finnish posting to you, NIS would've probally realeased atleast 10 more games, and I rather not miss out on a potentionally godly game(there are so few great games in this crappy new school world, that you really can't afford to miss out on any.
Just incase you just scimmed through it, I must say it again
Note: Additional aspecs that are added to the game, that are not needed or that will not impede your playing of the game in any way what so ever, shouldn't be complained about, and there was alot of stuff you complained about for no reason.
