People claim random freezes, which I don't think I encountered during my playthrough; Drach said he had 3 random freezes. These can be overcome with simple persistence.

The Raki glitch is hardcoded. Raki is one of the story bosses leading up to the final boss (you have a chance to save after defeating her). If you don't defeat her in the first 3 turns, she's likely to use an attack that freezes the game. It's pretty easy to defeat her in 3 turns if you've done all the optional content, otherwise it might be a challenge. She's also an optional boss that can be defeated repeatedly to unlock some CG. This task becomes almost impossible, due to the glitch, without resorting to exploits, as she grows stronger and uses the "freeze" attack more frequently in the optional battles.

The freezes aren't gamebreaking, but they're a deterrent to both casual gamers (who might not be able to beat Raki) and hardcore gamers (who probably won't be able to defeat Raki multiple times to unlock the CGs). And of course even the occasional random freeze will piss anyone off.

But you're absolutely right. The 3 people I see complaining in this thread right now obviously love AT2 as well as the series in general, and are simply dismayed that NISA didn't do as good of a job with the localization as they should have.

And about the random freezes, well, they happen at random, though there were two ocassions in which the game froze on me:

1)In the scene immediately after Hibernation is interrupted.

2) One time I was going out from Enna to the World Map.

So the best you can do is save at every chance you have.

As much as we complain, it's not because we dislike the series. They're wonderful games, but AT2 in particular has incredibly painful errors. The only error that comes to mind from AT1 is that they doubled Shurelia's age.

In AT2, the third-to-last boss has a wonderful glitch and you have to defeat it before the third defense phase, second if you're really unlucky. Replakia (or rather, Replekia) is the solution for the required boss fight.

Then there's a (repeatable) freeze on Cloche's path when you first pick her during Phase 1. The screen will show something (do not remember what it is), and in the middle of the speech a sound effect will go off. Hear it, and the game freezes. You have to get through that section faster than the sound effect.

My other two freezes were entirely unpredictable. One happened after the anime scene that comes with the hymn Viena (I lost several hours that time). The other happened after I synthesized a bunch of items and just as I went to the save point... BAM. That one wasn't as painful, as Viena taught me a lesson to save more often >.>

...Come to think of it, all but one of my glitches was when I pursued the third reyvateil's path.

But yeah, don't let my complaints and horror stories stop you from playing the games. They're gems at the heart; one of them just happens to be horribly unpolished.

It's slightly spoilery, but everything of significance is covered here:

I'm sure that what the screen showed during that part of Cloche's path was the image of Infel Phira on the skies (for reference).

I never had any kind of freeze besides Raki -_-
Yeah, I knew about it just I forgot that is the battle that I have to watch out.
Well, she's very easy to be defeated in 3 turns so no worries. Play Ar Tonelico saga!!!

Hmm that ponytail girl named finnel looks very similar to cocona. Could she be?! she was captured and died then get resurrected using nano technology without past memories???
But the biography said that she was born there...probably I'm wrong -_-

And furthermore, Cocona is a Third-Gen IPD, while Finnel was described as a Beta in the scans.

Yeah, I've been thinking if the plot and story line of this game would be different from its predecessor.
This game needs a real evolution to keep up with other popular series =)

Mr. Darch, I feel for ya. Personally, I had drafted a number of versions of an open letter that addressed some of your concerns after playing AT2. The first game was probably my favorite rpg to have come out in recent memory, and I still loved the second game despite the sweeping gameflow changes.

Everything leading up to the release, such as the advertisement campaign and announced extras, pointed to what should be a fantastic release. It was obvious that marketing did their homework for this one.

I was okay with some of the typographical errors, wrong/misplaced dialogue translations, the double playing of Japanese vocals over top of English vocals (something I've only seen elsewhere in Atelier Iris 2, but here it was abundant), and characters saying lines from the wrong plot branch. These didn't prevent me from enjoying most of the game, just provided a rougher feel to it than I was expecting. The infamous Raki bug was what kicked me in the face. I actually thought my PS2 had broken because it kept happening. A little research found me with extra hardware and a fan made patch to sidestep the issue.

In any case, after finding that they had mucked up what I would otherwise call my favorite RPG of all time (well executed subject matter, building upon otherwise new gaming concepts and a really interesting game world, decent replay value), I feverishly drafted several versions of an open letter. I sent it to some people behind the scenes in strategic positions to see who agreed and in what ways. I found one that was universally smiting and through some luck, I was able to get Nao's personal email address (not for sale or trade, don't even try). I was as furious as you probably are at this moment and was ready to send this to anyone to get my point across.

What happened? A day or two before I was going to push that red button (which would have been a Friday), I saw an announcement for Cross Edge and Mana Khemia 2. I came to the realization that if NISA was the type of company that would just push junk out the door to generate revenue, they wouldn't have worked on Cross Edge, which was a move that I could only describe as "ballsy" considering how incredibly niche the game was. Additionally, Mana Khemia 2 was a game I had been waiting for with no word for a year or two and thought it was lost to North America. Since the release of AT2, NISA itself had been bombarded constantly with these issues and at this juncture I was willing to wait to see if they had at least learned from this experience.

Upon receiving my pre-ordered copy of Cross Edge, I found that I was right. Though I wouldn't describe it as my favorite game of all time, I would definitely describe it as a sterling release. Aside from exhausting game mechanics, I found nothing wrong with any of what NISA would be responsible for. Mana Khemia 2 was similar. As of this writing, I'm on my second play through and the translation seems good enough (some random typos persist).

tl;dr: You're not saying anything that someone else hasn't said already over the past 8 or so months. You've had a while since AT2's release to realize that NISA has learned a lesson from that experience, so saying this now only hurts our chance of seeing AT3.
