Ar Tonelico II problem
I pre-ordered Ar Tonelico II and I've been playing it ever since I got it. I love it! I'm very grateful to you for bringing us the sequel of my favorite game!
But unfortunately, at the part where I am fighting Raki, I cannot advance any further because the game always crashes in the middle of the fight. Is it possible that my disc is defective? I have checked it and there is absolutely no scratches, and it seems to always crash at the same place.
I also heard rumors that about 10% of the voices were cut out in the American version. Is this correct? That won't stop me from enjoying the game of course, however the problem with my disk is preventing me from enjoying it.
EDIT: It seems I finally managed to beat Raki without the game crashing! After playing for a while it seems to be working fine now. Time to enjoy the rest of the game!

No, this problem exists in every copy of the game. It's just a matter of luck, but beating Raki as quickly as possible helps.

More like 50%.

Re: Ar Tonelico II problem
I read that the crash is caused by a text buffer overflow and only happens on the English version.
Quote from Wiki:
"In the third-to-last boss battle of the American version, there is a bug where the boss has an attack that causes a buffer overflow in the translation because it displays a very large string of text, which causes the the game to freeze during the third Defense Phase. According to ign.com,[2][3] "That this made it through both NIS America and SCEA QA departments is, frankly, inexcusable. It's a potentially game-ending bug -- and one that, worst of all -- happens right before the end of the game. I don't know the particulars of why this bug appears in the localized version of things and not the JP release, but it honestly doesn't matter. It shouldn't have been there and the fact that you may end up getting past it randomly if the boss doesn't use that move (the alternative is to power-level until you can beat it in a turn or two) amounts to a crapshoot on whether or not you can actually finish the game... most definitely a bad thing." The bug also applies to the optional battles."

Thank you or your reply, indeed when I finally managed to beat Raki I unleashed all of my attacks as fast as I could. I suppose part of my victory was also luck. As a matter of fact, I finished the game today Wow... now I feel like playing it again to try another ending! I just hope I'll have an easier time getting through this part again...

Are you sure about this? I have found an article about this, and it seems to be around 1000 voices out of 10000 that were removed. Here is a quote:
quote: Zook reassures fans that no text or scene omissions were made for Ar tonelico II. The only possible difference is that while the Japanese game may have some 10,000 odd spoken audio, the American version has around 9,000. This was done partly because of the dubbing schedule.
http://www.t-ono.net/Gaming-News/Ar-tonelico-II-Localization-Answers.html
So according the Marketing Coordinator of NIS America, it seems to be 10% of the voices that were removed. Of course, there is no way to tell whether this is an official article or not. It does seem like some voices were missing in the game, but 50% of the voices removed would be ridiculous. That would be pretty stupid if that was the case.

Re: Ar Tonelico II problem
So.. if you play it with the Japanese voices (like me) you get the whole thing?

I guess so. I always play with Japanese voices as well, that may be why I didn't see much difference. Maybe what they meant in the article is that there are around 10000 Japanese voices and 9000 English voices? That would make sense, since the only reason voices are "missing" is because they were short on schedule, and that doesn't apply to the Japanese voices since they were already there.

But actually, they removed a lot of the JP acting (watching videos on Youtube of some scenes of the JP version and comparing them to the NA one should suffice to see the difference).

But didn't NIS make a statement that said AT2 had 100% complete images and scenes, and just some voices were missing? Overall I seriously disapointed in the quality of this release. I'm glad they brought the game over, but it really seems like a halfhearted effort.

Re: Ar Tonelico II problem
You'll notice NISA actually said in the interview that the Japanese version had 10,000 odd "spoken audio" while the English version will 9,000. That means the English version has about 4,500 English voice files and 4,500 Japanese voice files.
Technically, they didn't lie.
No images or scenes were actually removed, as far as I'm aware, just a lot of voice acting accompanying those scenes - however, there are three bonus-gallery images that are rather hard to get, because they require beating Raki (as an optional boss) fifteen times and these fights are also susceptible to freezing.

That's an equivalent to a 55% cut of the Japanese Audio, a huge difference. To prove the audio was cut one need to look no further than the opening scene.
Hear the voices in Japanese:
