Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?
Yes!
It's good to see that Nippon Ichi is capable of delivering games that are different from their norm. As good as Disgaea 2 was, it was also a bit of a rehash, really. Soul Nomad is an entirely different beast, with a bit more in common with Fire Emblem or Ogre Battle, paying homage to the older tactical RPG series.
I'm having a LOT of fun with this one.

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?
sweet... i was really looking for something different from NIS
im not a big fan of most of their other SRPGs, but this one looked too good to pass up
i noticed most reviewers are knocking it for not being like the other NIS games, which isn't really fair

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?
I'm now 12 hours into Soul Nomad (btw whoever decided to call it Soul Nomad over Soul Cradle should be slapped) and I'm liking it so far. It's so different from other NIS games that I didn't like it at first, but it's starting to grow on me.
Squad based combat adds an interesting element to the gameplay, but it also removes a lot of what I love about tactics games, the personal attachment I get with certain characters. Since I can't move individual characters, they lose their individuality to become just generic parts of a larger squad. If they because too weak you can just buy a new character with a higher level, which I'll admit I don't particularly like.
In games like Disgaea, I really become attached to my characters. I know it sounds goofy, but if they ever become too weak, I can always transmigrate them as another class and start getting them back into shape to be one of my best characters again.
I'm also not a big fan of the generic nameless main character. Games like Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, etc have these types of characters, but I've always preferred a main character with a strong personality, like Laharl.
Complaints aside, I'm still enjoying this game and I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing where the storyline goes, and finding Asagi in the bonus missions at some point (I'm a huge Asagi fan).
Oh and if some NISA personnel are reading this, I'd like to make a minor complaint. I found it completely unnecessary to put profanity in Soul Nomad. I can understand bits and pieces of Japanese and I know Gig isn't saying anything worthy of the "S" word or "retard" or "dumbass". He says "idiot" a bunch, but that's not too extreme of an insult.

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?
The game plays quickly and promises low necessity of level-building, but there are a few flaws.
I'm not so sure I'm comfortable with how so many of the actions take place automatically. How your characters attack is pre-determined by how you've positioned before battle.
The fact that the hero's plot interactions with the other characters aren't voiced-over is total bullocks.
Soul Nomad, however, more accurately simulates real war, as you have a number of squads that consist of multiple characters, and battle is squad vs. squad-based; that's to say that you have groups of characters all at once fighting with another group of characters. The battlefield maps are more zoomed out in scope, so you're going to have plains, forest, and mountains all on a battlefield map. Think almost of the Civilization (PC) series, if you've ever played that.
It really seems to emulate Final Fantasy Tactics, as you're back to taking turns, as opposed to a side taking all of its turns at once. Plus, you have town menus and world maps to navigate through. Then there's the soundtrack; I'd swear that Sato is trying to emulate Sakimoto. The game overall is very dark, apocalyptic, and medieval, and there's more political intrigue. And, after all that, NIS still remembers their trademark demonic, badass rockstarity that has made their previous games so popular.

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?
The gameplay seems to focus more on pre-deployment and overall tactics than on individual combat. It reminds me a lot of Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen and Person of Lordly Caliber. I love this since I haven't been able to play either in about eight years.

I'll say. It's like the game could stand to just play itself as soon as you enter battle.
It's like you could just put in battle formations and the other options that you actually have control of, and then the game could quickly calculate which side would win.
The only stuff that's really manual in battle is positioning your characters next to the enemy to attack them.

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?
From what I read here, and see from some screenshots...
Seems this game may be/play somewhat like Dragon Force from the sega saturn game.
Can anyone comment?

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?
It is probably closer to Ogre Battle than Dragon Force.
In Soul Nomad, like Ogre Battle, you get to design your squads. I want 2 knights in the front row, archers in the middle, etc. In Dragon Force you have 100 of x and that's it.
Dragon Force has realtime battles that continue until 1 side loses or retreats. In SN, 1 squad attacks and the defenders that survive that attack (1 per squad member) retaliate. After the attack/retaliation, the turn is over for that squad. OB was a little different since characters could attack more than once.
Another similarity to OB over DF is that the arrangement of the squadmembers determines that member's action. In other words, an archer in the front row will rapid fire at 1 enemy while an archer in the middle row will attack an entire row of enemies.
All 3 games have special attacks of some sort (atomic wedgie!). In SN you have to choose to use the attack before the battle starts. It takes place after the attack phase but before retaliation.
In SN/OB the individual troops gain levels while in DF they do not.
The Generation of Chaos series is probably the closest I have seen to DF.
Let me know if you need anything else.
