Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?

The game is ok, but not great. First off, you only do one type of fight, kill everything, story battle wise that is, or die to win. This gets old fast because you never really get a large smattering of enemies. What I mean is usually you get one type of enemy, instead of combinations, at least until the mid 30's battle wise. The last 2 fights have started to use more variety, so hopefully it keeps getting more varied as I go further.

Another issue is the power struggle. It saddens me when I have a lv 25 unit going up against a lv 12 unit, and I actually lose characters. Mages especially put the beat down on me, unless I am double their lv, below 40, or decored out to raise resistance. I don't feel levels themselves really help me in this game, I have to over level. Basically, you will not win with the number of troops you can have on the field if you arent a good ways past them in levels. You can really help yourself if you learn the strength/weakness relationship between various units, and make full use of the recon option before each battle. This just got a bit too much for me, that I just got my main guy's unit to lv 50, and am currently plowing all the lv 13 to 18 monsters I run into. My lv 25 unit doesnt fare so well though.

Some advice, after a few battles doing fights, make sure you turn off the ally and enemy graphics under options, it will save you a "lot" of time as it cuts battles animations down to about a 1/4 to a 1/3 of the time it takes with graphics on.

The game doesnt seem too bad, but I really miss the big pictures of characters in a lot of NIS's other games. There are pictures of them in this game, but they are kinda dark, and not as sharp looking.

Basically, its not a bad game. If it had varied missions, like protect quests, and so on, it would be a lot better, as the different mission types would help break the monotony of just going into the middle of a bunch of monsters, casting defense or attack up, and then ending the turn, change channel on tv, watch tv for 5ish minutes, come back, most of enemies dead. I thought I was going to get a protect mission once, but even though the character was smack dab in the middle of a group of enemies, as soon as the fight started, the character was gone, nowhere to be seen till after the battle when the character comes out from behind you to chat with you.

I will play the game, and I will probably play it again after I start and beat wild arms 5. I am glad I bought it, because it isn't horrible. But, this game does not hold the appeal of most of the other NIS games. I feel this was a test drive for NIS, to try this type of game, and I hope that if that is the case, the next one comes much more fully fleshed, and with a lot more variety and customization.

Welp, thats my slightly past he halfway point of the game take on it.

Oh, yeah, ps.

Don't even bother with inspections for powering up rooms till your at least lv 40, otherwise it will take too long, and you can't reliably do chains to rack up rp.

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?

To each their own. I found the story mode very easy while using strengthen items to keep the enemy levels above mine. Then again, I used at least 2 squads (rooms) from the time I got archers onward, balanced my main squad with units of all types, and combined with townspeople to increase my stats.

The rock paper scissors system is not too difficult to master. Range (i.e. archers) have an advantage vs magic (i.e. pyremages). Magic has an advantage vs melee (i.e swordsmen). Melee beats range. There are some exceptions but they should jump out. Nerids are melee but have magic resistance comparable to an archer. Gypseys seduce males, bards seduce females, etc.

The main character is weak to magic but should not fall to casters unless A: cleric is dead or B: casters (plural) are bosses. If the casters ARE bosses then I would engage with my archer or seraph squads while my main turtled and cast iron will (+50% defence and magic resist). The only time a player would need to be stronger than the enemy is when they refuse to use a squad in addition to the hero. But if you are only using 1 squad, that seems to take the "strategy" out of the strategy game.

There is little variation in story mode objectives but there were major differences in inspection battles. In one inspection floor, all enemies except the boss are hidden until you bump into them or they attack. On the next floor, all enemies may gain +25% to their level each turn 80->100->125 (each squad may get to do multiple things before the "turn" is complete). Another floor may be something else entirely.

pitsukuro: thanks for a great reply to my question. Much appreciated.
SN sounds like a pretty solid choice for me, OB is one of my all time favorites.
I'll be checking the strategy discussions in the near future!

Also noted that you mentioned the Generation of Chaos series has some similarity to DF.
Thanks for the heads up.
Maybe its time I give that series a try too. I passed on it a while back, not sure why...

The first US Generation of Chaos just throws you in there with little to no explanation of how stuff works. If you start with the first game, then take a look at the guide downloadable from NISA's site (one of the buttons below forum). It may take an hour or 2 to get a feel of what the 4 letter buttons do. It may take less with experience playing DF and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Aedis Eclipse holds your hand more in the lower world campaign but the system is a little different from the previous GoC so it won't help too much to play the sequel first.

GoC Tips: Build the town markets (or whatever they are called) to 5 so you can instantly move from 1 lvl 5 town to another.

Weather (like fog) determines bonus or penalty to attack so take advantage with items. If you are using a few infantry units then have the first to attack use an item to make it sunny so all will have the huge damage bonus. Terrain determines your defensive bonus or penalty. Undead have a huge bonus at night (watch out for skullknights!) so items can again turn the tide.

Use the guide to see what locations sell what items/equipment rather than loading the shop for every town and castle on the map.

...And despite what the guide says, kamikaze formation is not worthless. If a dragon is going to 1 shot your troops anyway, might as well give them the biggest offensive boost possible.

Re: Who has the game? Initial Thoughts?

I learned another way to play soul nomad as well. After I discovered the ally/enemy on/off switch, I started bringing out more units and left my main guy behind the lines, unless needed. Made the game a good deal more enjoyable.

As for me having to level up, it comes from some of the earlier fights being near impossible, even with 4 units, unless you lv up. After having this happen to me twice, I finally just concentrated on inspecting a open room, and that was how my guy got past lv 40. It wasn't worth trying to level up multiple units in inspections, as enemy units usually go for the weak units first, and massacre em. So my inspecting strat was just to load up my main toon with an exp boosting decor, alot of defense, start an inspection, cast defense, and leave the computer up to it.

I have a better opinion of this game, especially since I found the little surprise after you start over from beating the game.

I do have one big gripe though... I feel the special moves shouldn't of been as prohibited as they were. I seldom got to use mine because either the unit died before it could go off, the fight ended, or it just took me forever to lose enough stamina unless I used 1 or 2 units in a battle only. I would of been happy if the special moves were less deadly, but much easier to actually make their number of uses hit 0. I know there is a decor to help with this problem, but I don't feel that somebody should be required to use a decor to use a special move. I say lower their strength and make them usable all the time.

I absolutely love the game and hope that they make many more like it.

The concept is brilliant; tactical character classes organized into squads and thrown into a massive battle. However the concept still has a long way to go before it is fully realized. I hope they expand on the idea and make even more amazing games in the future!

well the thing i like about this game, is that it isnt about mindlessly sending people in to attack things all at once... it actually involves tactics, and like others have said before, pre-deployment... some of the missions take VERY careful consideration and doing recon...

(personally, the setting i have my hero's base on is the one that has increased stats but always goes second... thus my healer heals everything and the main group always has full health)

one of the things i like a lot about this game is the team attacks and what-not... though the battles remind me of the side view of FE a lot... ^.^ but demon blast is such a great attack that puts omnislash to shame XP ^.^ anyway, thats it

I bought the US-release and later the pal version, one of the best NIS games.
But still there should have been a battle command system like in Quests Ogre Battle (attack leader, attack weakest, attack strongest etc.)
