When does time pass?

I just started playing the game and finished the first assignment. Games that have timed events make me nervous, because I worry I will miss something or screw something out. When does time pass in Mana Khemia? Is it only when you are in the field/dungeon in areas where you fight monsters, or does running around campus detract from your assignment timer as well?

Only the dungeons/areas with monsters have a timer.

However if a mission requires a 5 hour completion and you complete it in 4 hours then you will still hit Rank A for that course even if you stay in the area for 20+ hours.

I'm not sure what you mean. The first assignment was item collection. Does that mean as soon as I find all 3 items, the timer stops running and I can just explore as much as I want?

If your doing a timed assignment, the game will tell you when the timer starts. As soon as you finish whatever you were supposed to do, the game will give you the "Assignment Complete" message & the timer stops then.

In the case of that item collection class, if the game didn't give you the "Assignment Complete" screen, then the timer will still run until you leave the dungeon. So its best in that case to get the items as quick as possible & leave the dungeon immediately to stop the clock.

The very first mission isn't a time based one so you can still stay for over 20+ hours and still hit Rank A for this mission.

Yes if a mission is time based the timer stops once the mission is completed and you can still explore after the mission is done.

Just to clarify the posts so far:

If the assignment has a timer, it will say so in the description and give you an Assignment Start! message when the timer starts ticking. Timed assignments generally only start the clock when you are in the correct field. The description is very clear as it will mention the time limit in the ranking criteria.

Timed assignments will not count time spent on campus. That is because they don't start while you're in that timeless zone. Don't worry, you cannot leave a field or a designated event field while you're on a timed quest unless you want to abandon it. The game will let you know if this is the case.

There are 2 ways for a timed assignment to conclude. The first is the automatic, drop everything and back you go conclusion which is used for some of the assignments such as the introduction to mining. The second is a soft timer and will just mark when you completed the task and you're free to explore as much as you want or can once the timer has expired. In both cases the game will notify you when the timer has stopped.

1 hour is equal to 1 real world minute on the field. 1 minute is 1 'card' while in combat. Keep that in mind for some of the assignments which require you to wrap up a fight within say, 30 minutes (30 cards). Thus it reasons that 1 second = 1 field minute = 1 card in combat. You typically enter a field around 9-10am which gives you 8-9 minutes before the night cycle ticks over at 6pm, cycling to 6am when it's daylight and monsters will no longer rampage over your under prepared buttocks.

Running from a fight WILL penalise you with a fair chunk of time. I suspect around the 30 minute mark? Generally, if you can wrap up the fight instantaneously or within a very short order, you may wish to do so if time is of an essence. It's not a huge chunk of time, but it's something you will notice if you are fighting to stay out of night time and you're running from fights compared to simply avoiding the encounters. Yes, slashing does 'cost' you some time due to the animation.

One last thing: You don't HAVE to chain the assignments. I personally spent a fair bit of time before the required assignments and after clearing the jobs just to stock up on materials, exploring and searching for obscure recipes, gathering AP and generally field testing new abilities/equipment.

The only way which you can possibly miss out of stuff is if you skip the jobs and fail to search every field when you don't spend time after the assignments to explore the fields.

If in doubt, save before you run off to the fields for an assignment.

Thanks for the clarification. Played a little more this weekend and started the second assignment. This made a lot more sense to me, since the assignment didn't start until I got to the screen with the boss. I spent time exploring the two out of campus areas available to me and picked up a few recipes and lots of materials emoticon

Time passes in dungeon with monsters. Oh, maybe it's too late, but if you got A's in a row, you'll be at the end of last class. Not A, but if you obtain required units in just two or three classes, you'll be at the end of last class.
