Well, remember that fundamentally it comes down to budget and time. I'm sure they'd give every sprite a hundred frames of animation per action if they could, but in the end the artists need to be paid for their hard work and the game has to come out in a timeframe that will actually allow the investment into making the game to be made back (ideally with some profit so the company can grow).
Now I'm sure that some improvements can be made, especially with the ceaseless march forward of development technology. I wouldn't expect really radical leaps above D3, though, just because NIS' budget isn't all that large in the end.

Why are you telling us this? Go tell that to NIS not *NISA*. ****ing newfag. Sure, NISA is a *part* of NIS, but keep in mind that it's only a branch. Branches often hold no influence over the main house.

In my opinion though 2-D sprites don't bother me and honestly don't mind the fact that Disgaea 3 looks like a PS2 game just the fact that I can get trophies on it soon and get dlc characters of characters from other series makes it all worth it plus the fact that it's on a Blu-ray disc so which means nothing was hold back and not having to edit stuff from the game just to fit on a dvd disc.

I personally like the sprites in Disgaea 3 and the other Disgaea games myself although it would be nice to see them a bit more detailed
